    "Kathryn Hagen" is an artist and a full professor of illustration, drawing, and cultural studies at Otis College of Art and Design in Los Angeles, where she has taught for the last twenty years. A graduate of Parsons School of Design in Fashion Design, she also has a BFA and MFA in Fine Arts in painting and sculpture from Otis. She continues to teach, and is presently working on two other book projects for Prentice Hall. Her first illustration textbook is used in many schools both in the USA and overseas.

    A comprehensive review after reading all the others

    I wanted to give a review about this book but before I do, I feel that you need to know something about my background and how it relates in my synopsis of the text. I am a freelance patternmaker that lives in New York. I have a BFA in Fashion Design and Marketing and I have been making patterns for roughly about 16 years. I have also taken some additional classes in recent years to learn new techniques and enhance previous ones I have learned. I own several other books ranging from basic patternmaking, books that specialize in lingerie patterns, and menswear pattern books. I own patternmaking software and I am currently using all the things I have learned and applying it to drafting patterns on my computer. I own two dress forms (a half scale and a standard one) and I know how to drape. I know how to sew and construct simple garments such as a t-shirt and intricate ones like bridal gowns. I also know how to do rub-offs (copy garments) and how to grade (change the dimension of a standard pattern to fit a larger or smaller person). I wouldn't call myself a know-it-all or a master at this but I would say I know a great deal more than the average Joe when it comes to making patterns.

    That being said, I have come across all types of people that are learning or want to learn about patternmaking. Most of these individuals are designers (or people who think they are designers), fashion design students in college, people that sew as a hobby, or individuals that want to make some unique clothes and save some pennies in the process. All of these are good reasons to learn the skill. In order to learn anything, you need to start with the basics. When I refer to the basics, I mean that you need to start with knowing what a pattern is, what it's used for, and how YOU will incorporate its use in what you need to do. By knowing this, you can figure out where you need to start and what type of book will give you the information you need to get you there.

    When I was studying in college back in 1993, a very good teacher introduced me to the basics of patternmaking. She instilled in me the importance of accuracy, explained the use of the tools, showed me how to measure and incorporated the application of those measurements in developing the basic pattern (also referred to as a sloper or block). This was where I was introduced to the book, PATTERNMAKING FOR FASHION DESIGN (1st Edition). Although I used this book, it wasn't introduced into the curriculum until my third patternmaking class and the reason for this I think was because the teacher felt it may have been too advanced for a beginner with no prior knowledge of patternmaking like me. The first patternmaking book I was ever introduced to was HOW TO DRAFT BASIC PATTERNS (4th Edition) by Ernestine Kopp, Vittorina Rolfo, Beatrice Zelin, and Lee Gross. Even though that book was more basic than Helen Joseph-Armstrong's book, you still need to know the basics of the human body, measuring, and how to use the tools properly and I feel the best way to learn those things is from a qualified teacher or industry expert. Books will mean very little to you if you can't relate to the information within and if you don't have a reference to gauge your performance like a teacher or a tangible sample of what you are doing.

    Now for the most important part of this, the review:

    Like I said previously, I own a hard copy of the original book and I also have this new 5th edition (a digital Kindle version on my tablet). I feel that this book is good for an individual that already knows the basics of making patterns and wants to learn about more intricate garments and how to make patterns for those garments.

    PROS

    1. In comparison to the 1st edition I own, they have added information about computerized patternmaking (not how to draft on a computer, just on developments related to the industry), a menswear section, a childrens section, more information on drafting knitwear patterns and swimsuits, detailed directions on jacket construction (which is one of the most challenging things in sewing, in my opinion), and how to copy ready made clothing design. If you are on the fence about getting an older edition, I say you should get this (unless you get the older edition for a very good price).

    2. This edition highlights certain diagrams and instructions in a different color making following along easier for the reader.

    3. It's available as an eBook, which for me is good because I like to refer back to certain sections if I have a question about a technique or process. Easier to carry around on a 7" tablet when I'm out on a freelance gig. Plus, the eBook is cheaper. I like that they've taken the step to make it available as an eBook. Hopefully, the other publishers will follow suit.

    4. Very good illustrations.

    CONS

    1. Like a previous poster said, there are some errors with drafting the armhole for the basic pattern and they have some other numerical errors. For the asking price, they should make sure that these are perfect before demanding someone spend that amount of money. In my case, I purchased it for more of a reference guide. I have enough experience to correct the errors within when I draft patterns and the foresight to not even apply them to what I'm drafting.

    2. Although I think the illustrations are good, a lot of them seem a bit dated style-wise. What's more important to the user of this book is that they grasp the concept of the style lines they want in the garment and be able to apply those techniques in developing a style that is aligned with current market trends.

    I gave the book 4 stars because it does most of what it intends to and that is to inform the reader about various patternmaking techniques and how those techniques apply to the development of different styles across all markets, genders, size ranges, and age groups. It lost a star for the errors in the text, which is inexcusable.

    Before I end, I would like to offer some advice, tips and suggestions that may help the previous posters and additional people looking to learn patternmaking or wanting to buy books on the subject.

    When you use this or any patternmaking book, the measurements given within are a collection of general data taken from a small sample of human beings. Even if you magically happen to fit into one of those general categories, you still have to check and fit the final pattern by making muslin mock up. It would also help if you had an additional set of hands or a person that is knowledgeable in fitting to help you (you can't check your own back, your own shoulders or adjust a hemline properly without some assistance). That way, you know where the issues are and you can apply the corrections accurately for the best results.

    Know how to measure and know how to convert fractions into decimals. (i.e. 1/2"=.05, 5/8"=.6250 etc.). It surprises me the amount of people I come into contact with that have no idea on how to use a tape measure.

    Buy the right tools and learn how to use then properly. To make patterns, the most basic tools you need in you arsenal are:

    1. An 18" C-Thru transparent inch/metric ruler
    2. A plastic French curve
    3. A hip curve
    4. A pencil
    5. An eraser
    6. A tape measure
    7. Paper (blue dot paper is the best option because it will help beginners with their accuracy by lining up the dots but if you don't have that option available to you, you can get a roll of that white paper they use at the doctor's office. The stuff that they roll out on the examination table that you sit on. You should be able to buy it at a medical supply store and almost every town or city has one).

    In the beginning of most patternmaking books, you will see a more detailed list of supplies but if you have these basic things, you can make any pattern. If you do it more frequently or want to invest more in the process, you can buy additional tools.

    Before buying this or any book, check your local library to see if they have a copy. You'll be surprised at what you find. You can also check the local college bookstore to see if the material is relevant before pulling the trigger. In New York, FIT is a good resource for this and it's open to the general public. A lot of local New York libraries in Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Queens have patternmaking books in their collections.

    If you can, take a class or find someone reputable that can teach you the basics. Once you have learned the basics and have the concept of how to create a pattern from scratch and how that relates to a finished garment, you will be able to better understand any book.

    Check YouTube and the Internet for videos and how to blogs and/or posts.

    In reference to the comment I made about the different types of people that want to learn patternmaking, I will offer a few book suggestions. All the books I am recommending I personally own.

    If you are a designer wanting to make patterns for your collection, this book is a good recommendation but if you have absolutely no knowledge about the process, you may want to start with HOW TO DRAFT BASIC PATTERNS (4th Edition) by Ernestine Kopp, Vittorina Rolfo, Beatrice Zelin, and Lee Gross and after you have learned most of the basics, you can get the other book that accompanies this one titled DESIGNING APPAREL THROUGH THE FLAT PATTERN (6th Edition) by the same authors. It builds on the first book by helping you to develop more complex styles.

    For fashion design students, this book is one that you are probably using or are going to use and it's appropriate in a college setting because you should have a professor that can instruct you on the proper way to make a pattern and that can point out any mistakes in this book and how you can correct or improve on them. A good additional read is APPAREL MAKING IN FASHION DESIGN by Injoo Kim and Mykyung Uh. I was able to borrow this from my local library and decided to invest in it after reading through it extensively. I took a patternmaking class in 2010 and the way the teacher instructed me is very similar to the method in this book (she didn't use this book in class and was not familiar with it). It gives very good and detailed instructions and the illustrations are very good and easy to follow. One of the best things about this book is the way that the author diagrams slash and spread techniques and shows the direction for scissor placement.

    For the home sewers, I found that most of them have gained some of their knowledge from using commercial patterns which is a decent start but from a development standpoint, I think that THE PRACTICAL GUIDE TO PATTERNMAKING FOR FASHION DESIGNERS JUNIORS, MISSES, AND WOMEN by Lori A. Knowles is a good book for this category mainly because the book shows you how to develop a pattern based on a particular styles included in the book and how to change/develop some of those styles by changing a piece like a sleeve. The book has very detailed illustrations and reference styles by numbers so you can follow along. The beginning of the book has very good instructions on taking measurements on the body to develop the basic patterns and they even demonstrate the draping technique to develop the basic pattern. The book includes a really detailed measurement chart for regular, petite, and plus-sized women. There is also a menswear version of this book, which is rare in patternmaking books.

    My best advice for the individual that wants to make an occasional pattern for sewing up a garment is to go to your local thrift store or Goodwill and buy a really cheap version of the garment you want to make that fits, take it apart stitch by stitch, iron the pieces flat, trace them on paper and you'll have a pattern. If you want more comprehensive lesson on this without taking the garment apart, refer to PART 6 CHAPTER 25 of this book. Google and YouTube are also your friends.

    I know this was a really long read but I spent most of my Sunday evening writing this in hopes that it helps clear up some misconceptions and misunderstandings about the book.

    I was reading through some of the past reviews and one reviewer, 1st nest, made a very valid point in comparison to this edition and the 1st one. They have omitted a section of the book, a 52 page chapter at the end that discussed fitting problems and pattern corrections. For a beginner or even a seasoned pro, that particular section has a lot of good information for fitting and would prove useful if you were having problems with the fit of the garment (which is very common with your first draft). If I could adjust the way I rated the book based on this, I would probably lower it to 3.5 stars. All in all, this still is one of the most comprehensive books I have ever read about patternmaking.

    If you can get your hands on a 1st edition, the fitting section alone would be well worth it.

    Great book... if you have a teacher as well.

    As an aspiring designer who can't afford to go to design school, I bought this book (and the draping book from the same author)in hopes of teaching myself how to make clothe. I decided to get this book after hearing about its common use in schools. I mean what better book to get than the one they use in fashion school right?

    The good:
    -A lot of variety. The book teaches you how to make the very basic and then how to distort it and transform it into whatever design you want.
    -It has women's, men's and children's sections, as well as things such as bikinis and leotards.

    The bad:
    -Some of the directions are unclear. As someone who tried to learn with no outside help, I found myself extremely frustrated (specially in the beginning) when sometimes instructions seem to jump a step.
    -The illustrations are not always clear. For instance in the pants fitting part of the book, it was hard to compare what I was seeing in real life to the drawn pictures in the book.
    -Few sewing instructions. The book shows how to cut the pattern so the fabric can later be manipulated, but doesn't show you exactly how you would go about sewing that cut.
    -Some of the methods are outdated. After consulting with someone that has been working in the industry for the last 25 years I leaned that a few of of the instructions and techniques given are no longer used in garment production. This idea was reenforced to me after I had a dress ruined because the defect on the pattern only showed itself after I tried sewing with a fine fabric.
    -Some instructions are overly complicated. I find this specially in the sleeve instructions.

    In all this is a good book if you already know the basics or if you have a teacher. I would have had little to no complaints if I fell into either categories when I bought it. It's a great resource and can sometimes even be used as source of inspiration for a design. I should also mention that although the book covers fittings, a lot of it you will have to learn on your own. I had occasions where I did all the book suggested and fail, only to later find a solution for a fit on my own.

    Proof reader wanted

    Although as comprehensive a book on patternmaking as is available, this text is desperately in need of proof reading. Take for example instructions that refer to "Figure 2a" and "Figure 2b" on a page with illustrations labeled "Design 1" and "Design 2". Is "Design 1" actually 2a? One is left to puzzle out inconsistencies that result from a lack of careful proof reading. A fifth edition, one would hope, would have these issues resolved.

    Jeremy Puma is a Gnostic philosopher who practices a crazy, mixed-up spirituality based on the writings found in the Nag Hammadi Library and Zen Buddhism. He writes for people interested in a simple, mature approach to gnosis that doesn't rely on unprovable claims of apostolic succession or New Age neo-Templar silliness, but instead acknowledges the limitations of the material. He prefers a simple, direct style as opposed to the hoity-toity "thee and thou" filled silliness of more popular neognostic organizations, and doesn't think you need fancy hats or magic wands to be a Gnostic. For this reason, he will always be broke and marginal, at best, but that's okay. Jeremy currently resides in Seattle, Washington. He is available for speaking engagements, complimentary meals, and children's parties.

    Do-it-yourself religion at its best

    Those who have followed Jeremy Puma's writing career know him for his no-nonsense style and spiritual integrity. In this latest effort, Jeremy provides prayers and rituals for those drawn toward the "Sethian" Gnostic tradition. This is not a naive attempt to re-animate ancient Sethianism. Rather, it is the work of a modern spiritual practitioner working with respect for what we know of the Gnostic groups and texts of the early Christian era, but not afraid to bring his own insights to the table. One needs no elaborate vestments or secret transmissions to use Jeremy's prayerbook. Rather, one simply has to summon the nerve (a certain amount of nerve being required for practices which demand transformation!) and take up the work. Even if one is not inclined to pursue this particular Gnostic path, Jeremy's prayerbook is a fine example of a manual for an individual or a small group working outside mainstream religious institutions and professionalized ministry. As such, it points an important way forward and deserves serious attention.

    A Fresh No-nonsense Perspective

    I am very thankful to have recently found Mr. Puma's books and I'm going to note up front this review is actually for three of the books I have read, but mostly for "How to Think Like a Gnostic", which I feel is a companion and sort of introduction to his other book "This Way: Gnosis without 'Gnosticism'". These along with "A Gnostic Prayerbook" and honestly all of Jeremy's writings consistently convey his approach which is why I'm writing one review for all three books.

    "How to Think Like a Gnostic," along with "This Way: Gnosis without 'Gnosticism'" along with the other works by Jeremy Puma bring something new and fresh to Gnostic study and praxis that I think provide a very necessary approach in spirituality in general - that of sincere and heartfelt honesty tempered by life experience. In this book Jeremy lays out his hard-won ideology and practices of a subject that is most often confusing and full of so many lacunae (missing parts) that it is nearly undecipherable for any kind of 'real-world-view' (that is a loaded hyphenate right there), especially for those like me, just starting to try and figure this out for the Nth time. I've found in my experiences in trying to delve into Gnostic Studies that one must subscribe to one of two camps (and to some degree flounder around in both): 1) The purely academic view, which tries to pick apart, word by word, what, who and if these so-called 'gnostic Christians' were, OR 2) A modern, but often very questionable (in my eyes at least) 'Gnostic Ecclesia' - groups that often falsely proclaim some grand, but again questionable at best, apostolic succession to a fantastical and quite possibly 'mythic' original group of people from the first couple of centuries of the Christian era (meaning mythic in the sense of our modern understanding of them). I'm not going to get into details about my views on this but I have found both to be somewhat flawed ways of approaching the spirit what was behind true Gnostic thought and practice.

    What Jeremy Puma presents in his writing is an honest, often humorous, yet learned approach to the cosmology, ideology, and practices of the Gnostics, stripped of any superfluous baggage or hidden agendas seen as so prevalent in many of the quasi-masonic, occult or new-age groups around the turn of the 20th century that are still existent today and often claim to be the true lineal heirs of the Gnostics of old. He provides an honest approach that he readily admits to be his own and that others may not agree with - putting it out there to 'take it or leave it.' Yet, what is Gnosticism without this type of mentality? What other teachers can there be but those who share their hard-won knowledge for others to assimilate and work out for themselves?

    As such, Jeremy Puma's works hit the mark and I have found much delight in reading them (and re-reading them). They are a great starting point and a landmark with which to start looking into all of the other materials available on the subject. They present a way of looking at the world around us and how to process all types of knowledge and information and hopefully apply it in our lives.

    For those who want a tradition that is spelled out for them, this might not be the final say in the matter (but still a suggested read before joining any group that does have it 'spelled out'). For those trying to find a buoy in the great sea of Gnostic studies, this is it!

    I am very happy to have found this book. It covers prayer as well as ritual, and such things as Holy Water and Oil. As far as formalized prayer, there seems to be one for every occasion. I bought two more for extras for the church.

    Information, disease, knowledge and just about everything else is disseminated through a complex series of networks made up of interconnected hubs, argues University of Notre Dame physics professor Barabasi. These networks are replicated in every facet of human life: "There is a path between any two neurons in our brain, between any two companies in the world, between any two chemicals in our body. Nothing is excluded from this highly interconnected web of life." In accessible prose, Barabasi guides readers through the mathematical foundation of these networks. He shows how they operate on the Power Law, the notion that "a few large events carry most of the action." The Web, for example, is "dominated by a few very highly connected nodes, or hubs... such as Yahoo! or Amazon.com." Barabasi notes that "the fittest node will inevitably grow to become the biggest hub." The elegance and efficiency of these structures also makes them easy to infiltrate and sabotage; Barabasi looks at modern society's vulnerability to terrorism, and at the networks formed by terrorist groups themselves. The book also gives readers a historical overview on the study of networks, which goes back to 18th-century Swiss mathematician Leonhard Euler and includes the well-known "six degrees phenomenon" developed in 1967 by sociology professor Stanley Milgram.     Highlighted in Mark Buchanan's Nexus [BKL My 1 02] as a key researcher on networks, Barabasi here talks about his work in more detail. In an anecdotal narrative, he traces networks' mathematical parentage back to Leonhard Euler and the late Paul Erdos, two biographically as well as mathematically interesting geniuses. They set a foundation called graph theory, on which some sociologists in the late 1960s and early 1970s built ideas of how a social network functions; the phrase "six degrees of separation" arose out of their work. Amusing readers with what helped boost that phrase into general circulation--a Web site that calculates the movie-credit connections between Kevin Bacon and any other Hollywood actor--Barabasi then shifts to his own fascinating studies of the Web. His research group found that its domination by hub sites like Hotmail or Yahoo adheres to a graphical relation called the "power law."     Show's the point in 100,000 words, when only 10,000 were needed.

    What it says is true and it is extremely informative (almost too much so) because each chapter is the same practically; and if you've studied much about networks or sociology at all, many of it is already secondary. Good book for people who want a lot of needless text.

    Dull title, superb book

    This book describes the emergence of an important new area of science, and it's written by Alberto-Laszlo Barabasi, one of the pioneers and leaders in the field. The writing is clear and engaging, so the book should be fairly easy to read by general readers reasonably comfortable with science. Accommodating such a broad audience does limit the technical depth, but there's still plenty of detail, and the book has abundant endnotes which go into further detail and also link the book with the professional literature (pun intended).

    The systematic presentation of the book makes it fairly easy to summarize:

    (1) Many systems are complex, and thus are not amenable to conventional reductionism. Instead, complex systems typically involve networks.

    (2) The study of networks began with "simple" graph theory, and then progressed to random networks in which most nodes have the about the same number of links.

    (3) Real-world networks tend to be "small worlds" in the sense that the shortest path from a given node to any other node is typically only several links. This is the case even for networks with millions or billions of nodes.

    (4) Rather than being entirely random, real-world networks tend to display clustering, with "weak links" between clusters. These weak links, which may be random, are the key to making these networks small worlds.

    (5) Small-world networks tend to have a minority of highly-linked "hub" nodes which shorten the average path between nodes. More precisely, such networks tend to have a hierarchical scale-free structure (topology) which follows a power law with an exponent of 2 to 3, such that there are many nodes with few links and progressively fewer nodes as the number of links per node increases (again, hub nodes have the most links). (By the way, the ratings of this book roughly follow a power law distribution.)

    (6) Scale-free structure in networks is largely the result of a preferential attachment process in which well-connected and competitively fitter nodes have a greater ability to attract further links as the network grows ("the rich get richer"). If a single node has dominant fitness, a "winner takes all" effect can occur in which the network develops a star structure rather than a scale-free structure.

    (7) Unlike random networks, scale-free networks are robust against even a large number of random removals of nodes. This is largely because the minority of hub nodes keeps the network connected. However, targeted removal of several hub nodes (~5% to 15%) can cause a scale-free network to collapse (loose connectivity), thus making such networks vulnerable to attack. The problem is compounded if such networks are vulnerable to cascading failures.

    (8) Viruses, fads, information, etc. can readily spread in scale-free networks because there is no minimum threshold which the spreading rate needs to exceed.

    (9) Because the links in the Web are directed, the Web doesn't form a single homogeneous network, but rather has a fragmented structure involving four major "continents" and some "islands", and there is fragmentation within these continents as well.

    (10) Behavior of living cells is controlled by multiple layers of networks, including regulatory and metabolic networks. These networks typically have a scale-free structure with an average path length of about three. Across organisms, the hubs in these networks tend to be the same, but the other nodes (molecules) vary widely. This is why targeting drugs at hubs can be both effective and can have side effects (presumably, the key is to find and target hubs which are specific to disease states, if such hubs exist).

    (11) The economy is a network in which hub organizations tend to accumulate links as the network grows by absorbing smaller nodes through mergers and acquisitions.

    (12) Highly "optimized" organizations with a tight hierarchy tend to be less adaptive than networked organizations, and thus susceptible to failure.

    (13) Networked economies are susceptible to cascading failures, especially when the hubs become "too big to fail" (Barabasi's warning here was of course all too accurate).

    (14) Real networks tend to have a hierarchically modular structure, while still being scale-free.

    The only significant "negative" is that this book came out in 2002/2003, whereas network science has continued to develop since then. However, Barabasi has another book (Bursts: The Hidden Pattern Behind Everything We Do) coming out in just a few weeks, which should bring us up to date, and it makes sense to read "Linked" first, so that you can start at the beginning. Very highly recommended.

    Mapping the Internet

    This book is about the peculiar results obtained when the author set out to "map the internet". Just as we have maps of cities and towns it would be useful to know how to get from here to there via electronic means. One of the premises is that most people don't know that someone somewhere has produced information and published it to the internet unless your part of that "community". The author goes into detail about how new information is constantly being produced but that we can't find it unless it is connected thru "hubs" that many of us connect to in various ways (google, amazon, etc.). These hubs provide links to other hubs that in turn lead us to other hubs. Its all about dissemination of information. Why do some videos go viral and others never even get started? They make reference to the game "6 Degrees of Kevin Bacon" to illustate how all of us are loosely connected in very short distances via particular routes. For example we all know someone that everyone knows for some reason or another. I wonder aloud how this field will boom into a science and how retailers will exploit it. I remember a line from a book about the Manhatten Project that says something to the effect that "technology itself in not inherently good or bad, its the implementation of technology that causes the distinction." You can't tell me that sharing all that information on Facebook doesn't have some negative consequences.

Has to be very dated (2013); a new edition is weeks away. I am using this for a college class. The instructor has power point presentations for each chapter, which helps as you cannot complete the reading adequately.
