Fracture mechanics is a subject that has not yet fully matured. Yet, it has existed long enough, and its practical applications are important enough, that a great deal of information is already available. Nevertheless, we wrote this book believing that fracture mechanics is currently at a unique stage. Enough research has been performed to provide a solid foundation upon which future progress will build.
