Highly opinionated and superficial

Blah. Joyner uses the preface to justify the book's obvious shortcomings: "It is comparatively economical in price and size. That's the reason for it's length, the lack of companion CDs, lyrics, and color photographs. Paper, copyright permissions, and color printing cost a lot of money." So be aware, this is a low-budget item in various respects. It's just barely substantial enough for a school to get away with telling parents and the district BoE that the subject was taught. If you want something that does more than scratch the surface, or provides more than the absolute minimum of textbook production value, look elsewhere. The British Invasion deserves more than 9 pages plus a couple of song analyses.

One might think that, given the apparent importance of brevity, Mr. Joyner would skew the ratio of fact and opinion more in the direction of fact, particularly when some of the opinions he expresses are utterly misguided. To wit: "Stadium rock continued through the 1980s with bands such as Styx, Rush, Boston, Kansas, and Heart. The music of these bands was inherently formulaic and corporate and would lead to major underground rebellions along the way with musical styles such as disco, punk, and grunge."

Rush's music is formulaic and corporate? Disco was a rebellion against bands like Styx or Kansas? Such assertions throw every other opinion in the text into doubt. Also, the famous 3-song Yes album is titled "Close To The Edge", not "Closer To The Edge". Let's call that one a typo, but speaking of that band, it's a strange editorial decision to make the heading of the section about them "Rick Wakeman and Yes". Why put it that way? Rick's a legend, but to suggest that he was the primary source of Yes's prog sound is a real stretch. "Roundabout", which is arguably the band's most popular classic progressive rock song, features some great playing by Wakeman, but it was composed by Jon Anderson and Steve Howe. Many of Yes's records don't even feature Wakeman as a band member, and his solo efforts made far less of a contribution to the progressive rock genre than the band that made him famous, let alone King Crimson, Pink Floyd, Genesis, etc.

The edition I have is called the "Jersey City Edition" but in the section about jazz-rock fusion there is no mention of one of the absolute founding fathers of the genre, guitarist Al DiMeola, who is from Jersey City. Also unseen in the text is PM Dawn, a couple of Jersey City boys whose contribution to hip-hop is worth at least a sentence or two.

The writing is decent. The artists and styles that are mentioned are certainly essential. But I have reservations about recommending this book for classroom use, and certainly not for personal education.

This book does not look bad at all. It seems to provide a more or less thorough history of american popular music. It is organized and would be a good study guide. The first edition came out in 1993, so all or most of the information in this volume cannot have just been ripped off the web.

American Popular Music

The Joyner book an excellent survey of popular music. I chose it for a college general survey course on popular music I taught in Sping 10--it was a great class and the students reacted well to the book. Joyner treats each genre of popular music in a chronological manner, showing their development and influence on each another. The section on courtry music is especially interesting. ITunes links are provided to songs covered in the text. A number of the ITunes links are not the same arrangements discussed in the text, but they are easy enough to track down. I give this book a high recommendation, especially to anyone looking for a general overview of American popular music.

Thank you Anna! It was a pleasure to read your writing and I am so glad you've shared your story.
I believe what comes through in this book, although so much of it is incredible! The future sounds too good to be true, and in some ways like I've heard it before (maybe it's just familiar because it's true.) Anna does a wonderful job of addressing the craziness of it all. When speaking of this book to friends, I felt full body resonance, even when I knew what I was saying sounded over the top, and their faces showed disbelief or skepticism.
Parts of this book made me feel very excited, but simultaneously brought up my fears and blockages, which is good. I have been dreaming of possibilities for years, very similar to those Anna describes, and at times I have gotten pretty dead set on needing to heal the world. It feels strange (resistance) yet reassuring to have these parts of me spoken to directly, as this book does. It's so good to know I'm not alone/fantasizing/crazy.
This is definitely a helpful read for all of us on the path, seeking whatever is true. I will absolutely read this book again, more slowly next time, allowing room to process, integrate, and let it all wash over me. It felt good to read this and I look forward to reading it again.

I started reading the book a few days back and it is a fun read. I know that the author has given me free reigns on allowing Anna and Michael to work through me identifying themselves in their feminine and masculine energy forms. It is a fun ride, reading this book. I have always identified with divine as IT, the formless one, now I get to work with IT as whole yet being aware of their subtleties as they flow through me. This book is a must for you, if you are ready to embrace the divinity that you are.

If Your Ideas About Childbirth Were Formed by Claire Huxtable...

...who said that it's like taking your lower lip, stretching it over your head, and stapling it to the back of your neck, then you're thinking, like most women,
"Why on EARTH would I want a natural childbirth?"

Well, I've done it both ways now. After years of hearing horror stories from friends & Hollywood, but stubbornly deciding that since women had been doing it for eons, I could, too, I tried birth naturally with my first child, scared to death about it ... and failed miserably. I didn't know any alternative laboring positions, or to relax, or anything - I just braced for each contraction for 36 hours until I hurt so much I asked my husband to kill me. The inevitable epidural left me hurting for a week.

Well, wasn't that fun?

Then I took a Bradley class. Instead of teaching fancy breathing techniques and how to be a convenient patient for the OB, they taught relaxation - "You CAN do this; and fear only creates tension, which increases pain" - and what a difference. Without me fighting the contractions (which tensed up the very muscle the contractions were trying to relax), the pain went from unbearable to manageable. Sure, it hurts to have a lineman stand on your foot, but who's going to take an epidural for it?

Bradley taught me that if you're thoroughly relaxed and labor feels excruciating, something needs to change - position, environment, something. If it's still agonizing, something is dreadfully wrong - but if I were under an epidural, I wouldn't know that. Bradley taught that if you've been doing everything great for hours and suddenly you feel you can't take it anymore - that you're in transition and will soon be pushing and have a baby! (How true that has been!) The relaxation techniques I learned helped with the early labor (remember, you can't get an epidural before 4cm or after 10cm), the excruciating afterpains of a subsequent birth, and the discomfort of sitting on a sore bum, not to mention all of life's inevitable pains ever since.

Natural childbirth left me with so much more energy afterward that my 60-something in-laws are converts, too! They can't believe that the totally drained, beaten woman they saw after Birth #1 (who was afraid to use the bathroom and couldn't sit for a week) is the same who walked from the delivery room and immediately dressed and left at 24 hours for Births #2 and #3 (and suffered very little postpartum pain after the uterine-shrinking contractions ended).

Lastly, Bradley taught me better breathing (my trumpet-playing is vastly improved!), sitting, posture, and lifting techniques for the rest of my life. And gave me a few good laughs while he was at it. Love him!

good background info.

I Recommend this book as a companion to Natural Childbirth the Bradley way. The book has a lot of great background information and is interesting to read. It does not, however, have the practical information that you would need for childbirth, look for that in Natural Childbirth the Bradley way. It is this book that got me interested in Natural childbirth in the first place.

My mom had a horrible labor when she gave birth to me. I expected a simlar ordeal when I had my daughter. I thought for sure that I would need drugs, because if women who had drugs told me how bad the pain was it must be awful without them. When I read this book it made me feel that labor might not be so bad after all. My husband and I took the bradley classes and by the end felt educated and confident about the birthing process. I had my daughter naturally 20 days ago with no intervention. My mom was present and was amazed at how well the birth went. I am recommending this book to all my pregnant friends.

A must for natural childbirth

I must admit, I had my doubts about my ability to sucessfully give birth naturally. But once I read this book and began attending the Bradley Birth Classes with my husband, my doubts disappeared. If Pulse is any indication, I can hardly wait for the Chess Team's next adventure

Like many Jeremy Robinson fans, I was introduced to his writing through his first, self-published time traveling novel, 'The Didymus Contingency' and LOVED it. The idea of creating an action/adventure tale set around time travel that also happens to feature the Son of God?? Who could have conceived the success that followed? I have known that 'Pulse' has been in the works for quite some time now, and after finishing 'Kronos' I was really chompin' at the bit for this one.

Guess what? Jeremy Robinson does NOT disappoint. With each successive story you literally can SEE the improvements happening to his immense storytelling creativity and talent...and they are on FULL display here, I assure you. Who could map out even a semi-believable story featuring Greek Mythology and modern genetics and weave them together in such a way that doesn't make it sound silly? I'll tell you who: Jeremy Robinson. While I am NOT a geneticist, the obvious research that went into this novel is quite apparent and I am sure someone who knows far more than I do about the possibility of genetic organ regeneration can spot (if any) some flaws--but I certainly couldn't. It was hard to say where actual technology left off and wild imagination began in some places.

Oh, and the action?? Well 'Pulse' has been compared to Matthew Reilly's books as of late, and although I don't believe Jeremy came too close to the all-out adrenaline/steroid rush of Reilly, he certainly comes within throwing distance...and for someone like me, that is really great news.

Action, suspense and a great deal of 'What If' seems to play a central role here in 'Pulse'...in fact, if I were to compare this to anything else available, I'd say it's a cross between X-Files, Indiana Jones and Rainbow Six. I simply LOVED 'Pulse' from the first page and for those out there looking for the next Action King to spend some time with, you would be making a smart move to get to know Jeremy Robinson NOW--oh yeah, and go pick up his earlier stuff, too...you won't be wasting a single penny.

Kudos to Jeremy...now, enough playing around--get back to work on that sequel!!

FACINATING READ

When I found "PULSE" in a small bookstore in Oregon, I literally held "PULSE" against my chest and did a Happy Snoopy dance, much to the embarrassment of my daughter and strange looks from customers ! ! !

I eagerly devoured my new treasure in two days ! The characters are quite complex and bad-a**** ... each with their own unique set of deadly skills. I found myself walking amongst them ... experiencing the challenges, obstacles and emotions of each person...to include the evil ones ! ! !

This band of heroes goes above the call of duty to defeat a genetically created creature ...mythological in it's origin :).

Jeremy Robinson surpassed my expectations of PULSE. You desire action, compelling characters, mythology, killer weapons, a book that will make you think, leaving it's footprint in your memory for many days, months or longer, a heart thrilling experience, then I more than highly recommend PULSE !

Pulse Pounding Page Peeling Publication

If you are looking for a book that will give you heart palpitations and reads with the pace and energy of an edge of your seat video game, Jeremy Robinson's Pulse is the book for you. Simply put, it is a good time read. An evil billionaire sets out to discover the key to immortality and manages to unleash the wrath of the mythical beast, Hydra. A Delta Force team of soldiers is called in to fight various badies that include humans who can regenerate body parts thanks to their modified DNA that includes Hydra juice. Gun battles, hand to hand combat, monster mauling, it's all here. I can't recommend this book enough.

I've read and enjoyed a number of Robinson's novels and I think this is his best. He is firing on all cylinders here, providing a page turner to the nth degree. If you combined the DNA from some of the best authors in this genre (Rollins, Crichton, Reilly, etc.) and created some mad scientist concoction, you would end up with Jeremy Robinson clacking away on his computer keyboard churning out action-packed prose. Pulse is the perfect summer read.

Michael Sinnott received his first degree in Chemistry from University of Oxford in 1966 and a PhD in Organic Chemistry from Bristol in 1968. After a postdoctoral at Stanford in Bioorganic Chemistry, he returned to Bristol and progressed up the academic ranks until he left, as Reader in Bioorganic Chemistry, in 1987 to become Professor of Chemistry at the University of Illinois at Chicago. He returned to the United Kingdom in 1996 for family reasons becoming Professor of Paper Science at UMIST. Progression of longstanding orthopaedic problems facilitated his retirement from UMIST, but he continues his scholarly and research supervision activities at University of Huddersfield. He has published 120 research papers, two books, and edited and contributed to the four-volume set ""Comprehensive Biological Catalysis.""

A new approach to beekeeping, fascinating even for nonbeekeepers!

Well worth buying! The author, who teaches beekeeping in Ireland, has written an inviting and informative book based on his decades of care of honeybees. His experiments with hive design led to a new kind of hive for his own bees, and the book explains why this improved layout can help keep everyone's bees healthier, wherever they live. Every change he made from conventional beehive structures has a reason, and the author goes back to the way bees behave in the wild to explain how beekeepers can help rather than hinder their ability to thrive. A keen observer, it's clear that the author has taken the time to understand what bees really need. I enjoyed this book even though I don't keep bees. It may be addressed to beekeepers and contain plans to build hives, but it has so much more, in history, observation, essay and story, that it's a cover-to-cover read, fascinating enough for every reader.

Must for any beekeeper's book collection. Worth it for the hive-management strategies alone.

Fantastic book detailing some of the pitfalls of modern beekeeping methods and how to avoid them. I've been a keen bee-enthusiast for over 15 years, and some of these issues have been a problem for me and my family. I will be buying several more copies to share with other beekeepers, and possibly donating a few to the local library system.

The author details how to build a Rose hive (including free plans), so I disagree with a previous reviewer that suggested that Tim Rowe is only pushing sale of his particular hive. I think this book is a must read for any system, and could be adapted to the ubiquitous Langstroth hive with a bit of planning and a few medium supers. His thoughts on methods of keeping a hygienic hive are brilliant, and the concept of banishing the queen excluder makes a great deal of sense.

Those of you who are already invested in a particular method of beekeeping, it's still well worth the read to reconsider your current hive-management strategies.

Great book.

This was a great book on this kind of hive method. It is not a book with all the details on how to raise bees if there is what you are looking for, but it gives a good overview of why the Rose method has some advantages over other older methods. YouTube also has several videos from this author I recommend you check out.

V for Vendetta is, like its author's later Watchmen, a landmark in comic-book writing. Alan Moore has led the field in intelligent, politically astute (if slightly paranoid), complex adult comic-book writing since the early 1980s. He began V back in 1981 and it constituted one of his first attempts (along with the criminally neglected but equally superb Miracleman) at writing an ongoing series. It is 1998 (which was the future back then!) and a Fascist government has taken over the U.K. The only blot on its particular landscape is a lone terrorist who is systematically killing all the government personnel associated with a now destroyed secret concentration camp. Codename V is out for vengeance ... and an awful lot more. V feels slightly dated like all past premonitions do. The original series was black and white and that added to the grittiness of the feel while the coloring here in the graphic novel sometimes blurs David Lloyd's fine drawing. Grade 9 Up–The date is November 5th, 1997. War has ravaged England, entire races have been eradicated, the entire British populace is under constant surveillance, and the absolute power is absolutely corrupt. On this historic day, a man with a strong resemblance to Guy Fawkes (in action and dress) blows up Parliament. The bomber, a masked character named V, saves a girl named Eve from a violent crime and takes her under his wing. Moore's dystopian, fascist version of England, ruled by one central leader and his sects (named after parts of the body, such as Finger, Nose, and Voice), is systematically dismantled by the enigmatic V. Readers must ultimately decide if V is a mad anarchist/terrorist or a freedom-fighting avenger for good. Originally published in 1989, V has been reissued as a hardcover book with never-seen-before sketches and two new vignettes. This story is slated to be released as a major motion picture in 2006, and demand should intensify as the movie trailers come out. It's Just Great. That is all.

I recently read this for the first time. Wow. What a great story! A very cool, unique hero. Somewhat like Batman, somewhat like the Joker. A vigilante, a terrorist. A hero, a villain.

Every story should have at least one "Moment of Awesome", and this story has lots of them. From the opening scene on, it's great stuff. The dialogue especially is exceptional.

I really liked the artwork also. It was a bit dark in some places, so it has to be studied sometimes. But it was still wonderfully done.

My only negative about this story is that for me, it was a bit difficult sometimes to understand who all the characters were. There were a lot of names thrown around, along with many inner monologues. This wasn't a bad thing exactly. It just took a while for all of it to click. Once it did, it was okay. I'm sure it will all make more sense to me on a reread.

The story is compelling. Even though you can often predict where it is going, it is still very satisfying. The near future envisioned also holds up well. This is surprising, considering how long ago this story was written. It seems some themes don't grow old.

I like how this book - at its core - is about ideas. Personal freedom, and the role of government. These are important things worth thinking about, and most comics don't go there. That's part of what makes "V for Vendetta" so special. It's not so much a typical action story - although it does have action. It's really more of a thought piece.

What makes a "terrorist", exactly? Would a government building bombing be morally acceptable, if done against an evil regime? What is anarchy, and is it ever appropriate?

This book raises these uneasy questions, and offers no answers. The protagonist suggests his own answers, but still leaves the final moral judgment up to the reader. This is compelling reading, and raises the story above usual comic fare.

The Guy Fawkes mask was a stroke of genius by the authors. Forever now, it will symbolize something great: Ideas of freedom, personal responsibility, and constrained government. It also represents the flip side of that: mob rule, anarchy, and anonymity. (And at worst, terrorism.) It's not easy to consider those things in full.

I enjoyed this book a lot. I highly recommend it.

Way much better than the movie ;)

This is a great graphic novel, Alan Moore is such a great author, I was very young when this was first published but over the time I heard about this and got me curious about it.

I can't say enough good things about this, doesn't matter if you liked or not the movie. This will surely blow your mind :)

The climax is so great! I remember I was thrilled while reading it, couldn't put the book down. Such a great reading!

In V for Vendetta authors Alan Moore and David Lloyd capture the reader’s attention from the start of the graphic novel and never let it go.  The book fully lived up to my expectations as my five-star rating reflects. One thing I especially appreciated was the interplay of word and text in the graphic novel. Graphic novels have more to offer than a novel in that they contain both text and image. Moore and Lloyd use this to their full advantage. One thing that particularly struck me was how the text and image combined to affect my reading experience. Specifically, how using different “camera” perspectives enhances the storyline, as they often can provide more information to the reader about the plot, or even foreshadow.
Not to give too much away, but two scenes that deftly highlight this dynamic are the Madam Justice scene and the Bishop Lilliman scene. In both scenes, the point of view of the panels had the aforementioned effects. I found what makes V for Vendetta, and graphic novels in general, compelling is that they’re like no literary work I’ve read before. The last time I read a book with images was in elementary school. The originality, in addition to the detailed excellence of the graphic novel as a whole, is what makes V for Vendetta compelling, and why I would recommend it to all.
