The Interpretation of Dreams: The Complete and Definitive Text, by Sigmund Freud

What are the most common dreams and why do we have them? What does a dream about death mean? What do dreams of swimming, failing, or flying symbolize?

First published by Sigmund Freud in 1899, The Interpretation of Dreams considers why we dream and what it means in the larger picture of our psychological lives. Delving into theories of manifest and latent dream content, the special language of dreams, dreams as wish fulfillments, the significance of childhood experiences, and much more, Freud, widely considered the “father of psychoanalysis,” thoroughly and thoughtfully examines dream psychology. Encompassing dozens of case histories and detailed analyses of actual dreams, this landmark text presents Freud’s legendary work as a tool for comprehending our sleeping experiences.

Renowned for translating Freud’s German writings into English, James Strachey—with the assistance of Anna Freud—first published this edition in 1953. Incorporating all textual alterations made by Freud over a period of thirty years, it remains the most complete translation of the work in print.

Forget the controversy
By Karen Batres
Make up your own mind about Freud, but in the meantime, this is one of his great works that anyone can read without having technical knowledge about psychology. Freud included much about his own dreams, and the reader will suspect that he didn't "tell all" about his own introspection--nor would most of us! But this work, along with "The Psychopathology of Everyday Life" and "Wit and Its Relation to the Unconscious" are for all readers. It is worth your while to peruse one of the most influential books in human history. As for the violence of the controversy that Freud inspires--well, that vehemence must mean something: a hundred years later, we are still at it. Decide for yourself.

Important Classic Work
By Steve Proctor
As a psychotherapist I recognize that dreams are not the doorway to the unconscious but rather the window to the unconscious mind, its desires, impulses, and motivations. People like to give their egos and conscious minds too much credit for the decisions and actions in their daily lives. One must take into consideration that the average person has about 80,000 thoughts per day and according to most psychologists about 95% of those are repetitive thoughts that also occurred in their conscious mind yesterday or the day before. This helps to illustrate that we are, for the most part, driving on auto pilot in our daily lives. This begs the question of who is in charge, or as biologist Bruce Lipton has phrased it, "who is the wizard behind the curtain" in our choices and actions in our lives? The answer to this is question is that our unconscious minds are the real driver and pilot navigating our lives and not our conscious mind that is thinking redundant thoughts, like a broken record, throughout most of our day.

In order to gain a better understanding of the `wizard behind the curtain"--the pilot of our lives-- we must be willing to take an honest and uncensored examination and assessment of our dreams. It is in our dreams, when our conscious mind is unable to censor our true desires and motivations, that the "wizard" is revealed to us. Strachey's translation of Freud's "The Interpretation of Dreams: The Complete and Definitive Text" provides an excellent and comprehensive foundation to the topic of understanding, deciphering, and interpreting and understanding how our unconscious reveals itself to us via our dreams.

While some reviewers have stated that Strachey's translation is hard to read and has too many "archaic words" and lengthy sentences, I would have to disagree. I have found this text to be an extremely accessible translation of Freud's work and feel that Strachey helps to bridge the communication gap that exists between Freud and the twenty-first century reader. Freud's work doesn't get any more accessible than this.

Like all of Freud's writings he is very much present in this text with his own biases clearly showing throughout the book. Freud was a big bold thinker; after all, that's in part why he is an iconic figure. He was also a man of his time and one must take that in consideration when reading this text. During his time Freud was the leader, and father, of the psychoanalysis movement and his rather misogynistic views must be placed in the historical and cultural context of his own personal life and the time in which he lived. Yes, like most of Freud's writings there is a lot to get past, however, when you are able to remove Freud's biases from the work you are left with a comprehensive overview of the subject of dreams and their interpretation.

Is this the only book that one should read if they have an interest in the topic and want to gain a better understanding of the dreams and the unconscious? Of course, the answer is "no." The fields of psychology and dream research have grown and changed immensely over the last one hundred years and most (not to say all) theorists have gone as far away from Freud's views as one possibly can. However, no psychologist or dream researcher can ever completely get away from Freud's work as he did provide the groundwork for understanding this topic.

Is this a book that one needs to read if they wanted to gain a thorough and comprehensive understanding of dreams and their interpretation? Absolutely. This work is the foundation to the field and if one wants to gain a comprehensive understanding of the topic they need to start here. Strachey's translation of this text is a must have for the serious student of psychology, dream researcher, or lay person who desires a better understanding of their dreams and what they mean.

the dynamics of dreams are the bedrock of thinking
By Richard Stephenson
Most reviewers see the value of this great work, which lays out the dynamics of the unconscious mind. Others have a variety of misconceptions: first, he was not a cocaine addict. He misunderstood cocaine [as most people did] and, briefly, recommended it to others, including his fiancee. When his close friend died of it, Freud realized his error.
Second, one reader states that you can't find "measurements" to prove anything about dreams. As one who has practiced in the field, I can say that the reader can measure the truth of Freud's theory by using it to understand him or herself, by analyzing one's own dreams.
The dynamics of dreams are:
first, dreams are phylogenetic, i.e., inherited as a species; they are not ontogenetic, i.e., created by environmental factors.
R.E.M. studies have shown for fifty years that our eyes move rapidly while dreaming as is we were watching a film. However, all of the people in a dream are different fragments of ourselves, of our wishes, of our interests.
Second: this phylogenetic inheritance includes an innate propensity to think in pictures. Moving up the scale of consciousness, in Ucs. [unconsciousness, thinking is mostly pictorial but sometimes verbal]; in Pcs. [preconsciousness, i.e., in daydreaming, thinking is pictorial and verbal and partly in our control]; in Cs. [consciousness, thinking is mostly verbal but partly pictorial].
Dreams have two main dynamics: one, displacement [in which the mind protects itself by displacing the troubling thought with a symbol]; two, condensation [in which the mind places symbols on top of one another in layers in order to make the troubling thought hard to find].
Schizophrenics are hard to understand because much of their thinking is dominated by displacement and condensation while they are awake. Their speech has numerous layers of symbols - condensation.
In displacement, there is a manifest meaning [that which appears evident] and a latent meaning [that which one has to dig for by piercing the condensation of the displacements.
Any thinker, who chooses to simply understand, should avoid preconceptions or anger or a need to disdain or to repress. He or she should merely use the dynamics of dreaming to unravel his or her own dreams and daydreams [which can be analyzed with the same dynamics, except it is much easier because condensation is not as severe].
Freud was originally sceptical of his own insights and, as a result, he sat on this work for about a year, being reluctant to believe himself. He finally realized he was being defensive, that he was trying to repress disturbing truths about himself that were also true of us as a species.
In analysis, the analyst doesn't speak much because the best person in a position to understand himself is the patient . . . just as the best person in a position to understand his/her dream is the dreamer. Further, an analyst doesn't talk because he wants the patient to speak until he/she finally understands him/herself. That takes time.
It takes time for a person to crack the layers of condensation in his/her own thinking and to see all of the displacements.
After 100 years, Freud's book remains one of the great gifts anyone ever gave men and women to understand themselves.

SWEET DREAMS

Six months earlier…
September
She stood beside Dorian Douglas and took in his majestic presence. He stood tall, strong, almost head and shoulders above every other man in the room. His deep, chocolate brown skin shone as he held his drink in one hand, the other wrapped securely around Sunny’s slim waist. He practically towered over everyone, his regal aura seemingly radiant around him. Looking at her man, Sunny’s lips spread into a smile without her even realizing it. She loved him so much.
He stared down at her and she watched his lips as he spoke. “You okay, baby?” he asked.
She could see the other women in the room—women dressed provocatively in designer clothes, jewelry and expensive shoes just as she was. Each of them watched Dorian hungrily, wondering what it would take for them to snatch Sunny’s spot by his side. But even with all the sexy women practically stripping for him on the dance floor as the reggae music pumped through the speakers, Dorian’s gaze was fixed on her. He searched Sunny’s eyes as if he could see past them.
She smiled at him and he returned the gesture, kissed her softly on her lips, and held her closer.
“Yeah,” Sunny said. “I’m good.”
***
She didn’t realize that she was dreaming until the alarm clock blared in her ear, startling her. Sunny awoke, glanced around her large bedroom and came back to reality. Dorian was dead—had been for more than ten years now. And her daughter, Mercedes—tall like her daddy and as stunningly beautiful as her mom even at the tender age of twelve years old—was sprawled out across the other half of Sunny’s California king–size bed. Sunny turned off her alarm clock and smiled at the sight of her beautiful baby sleeping soundly beside her.
Mercedes had her own room—spacious, professionally decorated and full of every amenity any kid would ever wish for. But she still preferred to slip under her mother’s covers every chance she got and fall asleep beside her, inhaling that maternal scent that gave her comfort like no other smell on earth.
Since the day she was born, Mercedes had seldom been far from Sunny’s side. Sunny adored her, doted on her and would have only the best for her baby girl—her one and only child with the one man she had ever truly loved. Mercedes was the perfect combination of Sunny’s sass and Dorian’s cleverness. She was pretty, smart, and quick-witted like her mother, yet perceptive, aristocratic and calculating like her father.
Sunny appreciated that her daughter still longed to be in her bed at night. She knew that Mercedes was approaching a difficult age when teenage angst and rebellion could come between them.
Sunny had worked hard to get noticed by the elite of the entertainment industry and her persistence had certainly paid off. Over the years she landed major ad campaigns and had established an impressive portfolio for herself. She had been seen on the arm of more than one major player in sports or entertainment and was a favorite of the gossip pages. The name Sunny Cruz rang bells from New York to L.A. and she was doing her damndest to keep it that way. Some questioned Sunny’s motives for remaining constantly in the public eye, when so much of her life as a hustler’s wife had been lived in caution and discretion. Few knew that what truly drove her was an ugly unhealed wound that was so much deeper than what people saw on the beautiful surface.
Sunny leaned over and kissed Mercedes on the cheek, smoothed a lock of her thick and flowing hair away from her face, and softly shook her awake.
“Rise and shine, pretty girl,” Sunny sang. “It’s time for school.”
Mercedes peeked through sleepy eyes and smiled at her mother. “Good morning, Mommy,” she said. “It’s always time for school.”
Sunny laughed and nudged her playfully. “Come on and let’s have Jenny G make us banana pancakes.”
Mercedes bounded out of bed then and scampered off toward her own bedroom, excited that their live-in servant Jenny Gonzalez would be making her favorite breakfast.
Sunny smiled as she watched her go, then went into her bathroom and looked at her reflection in the mirror. She stared into her eyes and tried to see what Dorian had found when he looked into them the way he had in her dream. But all she recognized was the same pain that had taken up residence there the moment Dorian had drawn his last breath in her arms all those years ago.
Thinking of him caused her instant heartache. She had loved Dorian Douglas with such intensity that his absence made her feel hollow. She reached up to the top of the medicine cabinet and searched around with her hand until she touched the soft silk satchel that held her pain reliever.
She reached into the small black pouch, retrieving a tiny white pill. Sunny popped the Percocet in her mouth and sipped some water, eager for the drug to take effect and numb the pain to the point where she could slip out of her mind, just a little bit, for just a little while. Sunny wasn’t in any physical pain. She popped Percs like Tic Tacs throughout the day as a way of coping with the feelings she had struggled with for years—loneliness, pain of love lost, fear of boredom, and of a life filled with monotony and routine.
She got her Percs from Gillian Nobles, an old family friend who was a queenpen in her own right. Thanks to the Nobles family’s access to a cache of prescription medications, Sunny enjoyed the numbing relaxation of a tiny white pill. Pushing thoughts of Dorian to the back of her mind, she went about her morning ritual and emerged from the bathroom feeling ready to face the world.
Ninety minutes later, after a five-star breakfast, showers and hairstyling, Sunny and Mercedes sat side by side in the backseat of her Aston Martin, both of them relaxing with their legs crossed so perfectly they looked like an ad for an etiquette class. Mercedes was clad in her prep-school uniform, while Sunny was decked out in a DKNY blazer, white V-neck, and black leggings. Her red-bottomed riding boots and bright yellow BCBG clutch gave her outfit her signature flair for the dramatic.
Sunny’s driver, Raul, climbed into the driver’s seat and smiled at his two lovely passengers.
“Good morning, ladies,” he practically shouted, his hearing having deteriorated over the years. “Y’all ready to get going today?”
“Yes, we are,” Sunny confirmed. She leaned forward in her seat to speak directly into his ear so that her instructions could be heard clearly the first time. Sunny hated repeating herself to Raul—to anyone for that matter. “We’re dropping Mercedes off at school. Then I’m going to Midtown to meet with Olivia at Shootin’ Crooks.”
The driver nodded and buckled his seat belt. He was familiar with Shootin’ Crooks and with Sunny’s friend Olivia, who worked out of the company’s office on West Fifty-third Street, where she toiled nonstop in conjunction with her brother’s rap empire. Raul had been driving for Sunny for several years and Olivia had played an integral role in getting work for Sunny. Her referrals had garnered some great publicity and priceless contacts. It was one of the many reasons why Sunny counted Olivia as one of her few friends—a term she didn’t use loosely.
Sunny slid back into her seat beside her daughter and crossed her legs once more. She stared at Mercedes and could see Dorian in her. She was a lovely young lady and she was smart. Sunny couldn’t be prouder.
She watched as Mercedes toyed with her BlackBerry. “When you get out of school today, call me. I should be wrapping things up in Midtown by then and we can hang out,” Sunny said.
Mercedes finished reading her horoscope and nodded at her mother, smiling. “Okay. But can I hang out with Genevieve instead of meeting up with you?”
Sunny thought about it. Genevieve was Mercedes’s classmate—a caramel-complexioned Michelle Obama in the making. She agreed. After all, the two girls never got in any trouble—together or separate. “Where are you two trying to go?”
“Bloomy’s,” Mercedes answered, her face as sweet as could be. Shopping at Bloomingdales was one of her favorite pastimes.
Sunny had given her daughter her own credit card long ago, although Mercedes knew that her every transaction was being monitored. She was careful with her spending, but knew that her limit was bottomless.
“Genevieve’s sister works there so we’re gonna stop in and say hi to her and then do a little shopping.”
Sunny pretended to think about it, but she trusted Mercedes and really had no problem letting her go.
“Okay,” she said at last. “Call Raul when you get out of school. He’ll take you and Genevieve wherever you want to go and he’ll drop you both off at home afterwards.” Sunny leaned forward in her seat. “DID YOU HEAR THAT?” she bellowed into her elderly driver’s ear.
“Yes!” he assured her hurriedly so that she would stop yelling. “I will wait for Mercedes to call.”
Satisfied, Sunny patted him on the back appreciatively and sat back.
“Thanks, Madre.” Mercedes looked at her mom and smiled. “You look nice today,” she observed.
Sunny playfully pinched her daughter’s cheek. “I look nice every day, Mercedes.” Sunny winked at her. “And so do you. It’s in our genes.”
Mercedes thought about that, and decided that she agreed. “Yes. Bella is beautiful, too.”
Sunny smiled. “Bella” was the name Mercedes had given to Sunny’s mother, Marisol, as a child. As a toddler, she had...

Cocaine Madness
By Sinfunni
***SPOILER ALERT***
This book appears to be the authors attempt to scare people away from the use of cocaine at the expense of the characters she developed in White Lines. In book two (White Lines II), the actions and decisions made by the characters were simply ridiculous. Sheldon, a crack baby, is billed as a killer in the making. Now with him being in the system and his mother having to fight to gain custody of her son, the court did not mandate Early Intervention Assessment. Okay, so school staff did not insist that he be evaluated. Jada a journalist couldn't do research to figure out what to do about the love of her life, Sheldon. Okay, his attorney auntie didn't see the need to advise her sister to get help for Sheldon. All this money around and no one uses it to get him professional help. Born and Jada finally head toward marriage after being separated for a decade and rebuilding their relationship decide to part because Sheldon has mental health issues. Yeah okay, that's believable. Sunny goes to L.A. and on her first day wakes up to a dead body at the home of a man she was in a committed relationship with for a year. Bombshell Ava, partner at a law firm, can't find a man. Oh yeah she made it clear that she liked one (Malcolm) but Sunny breaks girl code to have him. Loyalty is Sunny's middle name so I ain't buying. Ava, Miss do it the right way, sleeps with a friend's "husband without the papers". Oh yeah, she was drunk. I guess Ms. Brown was trippin' when she wrote this garbage. Book II is clearly a set up for book III, but, I'm sober enough to pass. I suggest that she have someone else write it because she has definitely lost her way. I recommend that she reads T. Styles "Black and Ugly" series where she can learn that she can show effects of cocaine use without it being a caricature.

EXCELLENT READ
By DC Avid Reader
I enjoyed reading "White Lines II: Sunny". This book is the sequel to "White Lines", which told the story of Jada, Sunny, Born and Dorian, as the main characters. I liked the way Ms. Brown introduced the readers to Sunny's and Jada's life, years later. They both had changed their lifestyles for the better, as we are re-introduced to them. They both seemed to be doing great in the beginning of the book, but as time goes on, they both encouter some challanges, and some of which result back to their days of drug use and being in the roles of a "Wifey". Sunny yields to the temptation again, of the white substance, which is one of the reasons, her one and true love Dorian was killed. She has met a new beau, Malcom, who has truly fallen in love with her, but due to her temptation again, he is involved in as much danger as she is by the end of the book. Jada has reconnected with Born again, after all of their previous hard aches, pain, and mistrusts, which resulted in both of them having children with people they did not truly love. Jada's son, Shelton, is truly a Bad Seed from his father's DNA, who was killed, and one of Born's rivals. Shelton causes so much mental and physical pain in this book, that Jada might have to put her true love, Born on the back burner, until she can deal with Sheldon's mental issues. There is definitely a Book 3 in the works, based on the ending of the book. I just hope that Ms. Brown is working on Book 3 now, and it will be forthcoming sooner than later. Ms. Brown, please keep writing your stories in your voice and I will keep purchasing your books, and telling others about your books.

I wanted so much to like this book. . .
By Sapphire
Alas I was very disappointed. The first thing that distracted me was the age differences in the first few chapters. I think I would have enjoyed this more if it had picked up where the first one left off like Aftermath. The book kept telling me that Sunny was bored every other paragraph - ok I get it - she was bored so she started chasing the white lines again. Jada was reduced to tears every time she had a confrontation with her son. I'm sorry but the woman has been to hell and back - there is no way she would be this weak. If she had she never would have gotten off drugs and stayed clean for ten years. Born, a man I admired in the first book, was reduced to a spineless wimp who couldn't make up his mind whether he wanted to be with Jada or he just wanted to let the relationship go. After his behavior in this book, I think Jada deserves better. She deserves someone who accepts her just the way she is and doesn't keep straddling the fence. Sheldon, a good butt whipping would have taken care of that - enough said. Ava was just pathetic in more ways than one. She should have let Malcolm know she was interested. Why be mad when he falls for someone else and you never even let him know you were feeling him. I kept waiting for Sunny to grow up and realize that she could still her life on her own terms without having to resort to drugs but alas she lost everything because she was selfish and stupid. I am definitely interested in a third book because I know there is more to the story.

Entertaining Mr Sloane (Modern Plays), by Joe Orton

Published fifty years after the premiere of Entertaining Mr Sloane in 1964, and with a new introduction, this anniversary edition offers an opportunity to reappraise Joe Orton's reputation, and the status of his first major play, from a twenty-first century perspective.

When it first appeared in the Swinging Sixties, Orton's satire on social and sexual hypocrisy both scandalized and delighted audiences. Its mix of sexuality and violence was explosive. Within a year, the play was being performed around the world and went on to be adapted for film and television, establishing Orton as a major voice and this play as one of the most ground-breaking of the century. This anniversary edition features previously unpublished material from the Joe Orton Archive, an interview with director Nick Bagnall, and an introduction by Emma Parker, Senior Lecturer in English at the University of Leicester.

About the Author

Joe Orton (1933-1967) was an English playwright noted for his black comedies, which combine genteel dialogue with violent and shocking action. He delighted in shocking audiences by breaking taboos surrounding sexuality and death in conventionally structured 'black' farces involving epigrammatic dialogue and frenetic, convoluted plots. His plays include Entertaining Mr Sloane (1964), Loot (1965) and What the Butler Saw (1969).

Emma Parker is based at the University of Leicester where she specialises in post-war British literature and contemporary fiction, particularly women's writing. Her research focuses on issues relating to gender and sexuality, feminism and queer theory. Dr Parker is also responsible for the Orton Archive at the University of Leicester.

About the Author

Lynn Beighley is a fiction writer stuck in a technical book writer's body. Upon discovering that technical book writing actually paid real money, she learned to accept and enjoy it. After going back to school to get a Masters in Computer Science, she worked for the acronyms NRL and LANL. Then she discovered Flash, and wrote her first bestseller. A victim of bad timing, she moved to Silicon Valley just before the great crash. She spent several years working for Yahoo! and writing other books and training courses. Finally giving in to her creative writing bent, she moved to the New York area to get an MFA in Creative Writing. Her Head First-style thesis was delivered to a packed room of professors and fellow students. It was extremely well received, and she finished her degree, finished Head First SQL, and can't wait to begin her next book.

Lynn loves traveling, cooking, and making up elaborate background stories about complete strangers. She's a little scared of clowns.

Michael Morrison is a writer, developer, toy inventor, and author of a variety of books covering topics such as Java, Web scripting, game development, and mobile devices. Some of Michael's notable writing projects include JavaScript Bible, 6th Edition (Wiley, 2006),Teach Yourself HTML and CSS in 24 Hours, 7th Edition (Sams Publishing, 2005), Beginning Mobile Phone Game Programming (Sams Publishing, 2004) and Java Unleashed (Sams Publishing, 1997). Michael is the intructor of several Web-based courses, including DigitalThink's Introduction to Java 2 series, JavaBeans for Programmers series, and Win32 Programming series (www.digitalthink.com).

In addition to his primary profession as a writer and technical consultant, Michael is the founder of Stalefish Labs (www.stalefishlabs.com), an entertainment company specializing in games, toys, and interactive media. When not glued to his computer, skateboarding, playing hockey, or watching movies with his wife, Masheed, Michael enjoys hanging out by his koi pond.

Best Beginner's PHP and MySQL Book Out There
By Picky Reader
I have been trying to learn PHP and MySQL for a couple of months now. I have read (well, started) about 4 beginner's books. I would understand a little bit of it, but then the more I got into a book, the more confused I would get. It just seemed like things were either coming at me too fast or the writing style didn't flow, at which point I stopped learning. Not so with Head First PHP & MySQL. This book I absolutely cannot put down. The style makes learning so easy and fun that I just want to keep reading it. The funny thing is, the first time I saw a Head First book, I thought the layout would hinder my learning, not help it. Boy, was I wrong.
Another great thing about this book is the flow. Most PHP and MySQL books start off with about 3-4 chapters of PHP, then 3-4 chapters of MySQL, then the rest of the book teaching you how to use the two programs together. But by the time I got to the chapters learning how to use them together, I had forgotten half the PHP from the first chapters! This book has you writing scripts using PHP AND MySQL in chapter two. but you don't feel rushed.
Let me close in describing who I think this book is good for, and who it isn't. If you are three days away from a test in these two subjects, and just need to cram to pass the class and don't care about learning, just passing, then get another book. There are books out there that have specific areas dedicated to each term (variable, array, etc) summed up on two pages. Once you learn something in this book, you will keep using it throughout the book, which is very helpful. I personally have to do things myself, more than once, to pick them up, and this book covers that perfectly, without making one second of this book boring.
If you are looking for a specific PHP and MySQL reference to sit on your desk, and quickly look in the index, find a term, and use it, get another book. As the authors state, this is not a reference book. It is meant to be a learners book, read in sequence.
If you know some HTML and CSS (didn't seem to me like you even had to know very much), are completely new to PHP and programming in general, and want to learn in a way that allows you to retain what knowledge you pick up, BUY THIS BOOK! It is excellent. All the examples do a wonderful job of illustrating what you just went over in that chapter. Both writers are truly gifted, and have an excellent writing style. The layout is perfect. I can't shower enough praise on this book. Brand new beginners to intermediate level programmers will all benefit from this book. Two thumbs way up!

Maybe I'm spoiled
By Jason Semko
PHP is a difficult subject matter. These guys do a pretty good job of helping you understand and get the concept. Good beginner book. However, there are some problems. As stated in some of the other negative reviews, there is a lot of ambiguous text throughout the book where 'solutions' are given but no instruction is given on what to do. Occasionally there are parts where you are told "Now start coding!" with a few things left out. For example: In Chapter 9 you are told to create your first function out of already existing code. However, at some points of the lesson there is no instruction given on how to apply the 'return' statements of that function. Sure, if you're very focused you can figure it out, but when you put full trust into this book, you're constantly asking yourself "Am I supposed to do this? Is this part of the lesson? Will I turn the page and will it say 'Hey the page didn't work right? Here's why!'"

The learning format is a bit disorganized because the book is supposed to be 'rebellious' and 'fun' to read. But the constant placement of 'help comments' all over the page keeps your eyes bouncing on every page.

I've reported a few errors and for all those who do choose to buy this book...FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, ENABLE PHP ERRORS so you can catch theirs! (Not a lot, but hair-pulling errors)

Bottom Line: You WILL learn PHP
Bottom Bottom Line: You will at times STRESS learning PHP because of the book.

Helped me to get my first job on oDesk
By David K. Friedman
This was a good book. After reading this book my second application on oDesk was accepted and I completed my first web development job earning 5 out of 5 stars in all areas for the work that I did.

It is probably better to do only a few chapters carefully (following their advice in bullet number 9 to "write a lot of code") than it is to rush through the book too fast. Chapters 1 through 6 could possibly be enough for many quick jobs or small sites. You'll need chapter 7 if you are interested in keeping track of users (it covers cookies, and also HTTP authentication). Chapter 8 has good rules and guidelines on how to organize your database to avoid inconsistencies and problems.

The other chapters are: chapter 9 covers custom and string functions, chapter 10 covers regular expressions, chapter 11 covers a graphics library, and chapter 12 covers web services and syndication.

These could possibly be skipped if the reader already has a reasonably good background in programming (e.g. has taken two or three courses at the undergraduate level in software development), or does not expect that that those are necessarily needed for the task at hand.

For example, a good programmer who has learned programming fundamentals may be able to pick up how to use the GD graphics library just from the documentation that comes with PHP.

You can always come back to those chapters at a later time (after all you've got to help Owen save his dog!)

I've only done one job, so I speak here mostly from that experience. I would grant that it is quite possible that those topics in chapters 9 through 12 may come in very handy, speed things up, and improve performance for other contract jobs, interviews, or full-time positions.

Just practicing and exploring things can help a lot as well.

Feel free to laugh at all the jokes, and be sure to do all the exercises. Some of the advice may sound a little bit silly or extraneous (for example, talk about the topic out loud, or drink a lot of water while you are studying), but I think they are reasonable tips and suggestions for helping to learn, and I think they helped me.

I also used [...] (entirely as an observer, just reading the kind of questions that people have can help), and of course the PHP.net site which has all the documentation.

It can take some time to figure out how to navigate the PHP.net site, but everything is there. You can click around and find what you need.

Before I took the oDesk exam I also got on Safari the book Programming PHP by Rasmus Lerdorf (the inventor of the language). That book goes into more depth. I read chapter 6 on classes to learn more details.

That review of chapter 6 in Programming PHP was helpful when I took the oDesk skills test which helped me to get my first job on oDesk.

Like all technical books there is some errata which has remained unfixed on Safari Books. If you see something that looks like a mistake and are using Safari Books you can click on Extras and then go to Errata. There is also a forum on [...] for people to ask questions on. You can see some of Michael Morrison's posts on there.

On oDesk many people said that it took them a few weeks to get their first job. On the second day of looking I found that an employer had written a specification, which I looked at and then began working on in PHP. I submitted my cover letter along with a URL to the work that I had done. I bid what the employer asked for which was about 20% of the average bid. While others had required a few weeks before getting their first job; with the training from Safari Books I got a job in about a day and a half. I built a customer relationship management web application frontend that worked with Zoho CRM.

One interesting comment about my job is related to chapter 8 and has to do with database normalization and having for each table a primary key. The job that I worked on had a 12 page specification and they had in the specification a schema but there was no primary key for the only table in the database. In the middle of the contract I asked graciously whether it was possible to add one column to the table so that there would be a primary key. After demonstrating that I could help with the task my employer (who is an engineer and scientist but not a web developer or database administrator) agreed readily. I think this was a good example of applying Dale Carnegie principles. If I had asked to make this change at the beginning before establishing more of a relationship, and demonstrating that I could help with the task, the employer might have still agreed, however, I think it would have been more awkward. I might have to try to explain why such a decision constitutes good design.

I enjoyed the book a great deal. It helped to lift up my spirits when I was depressed about being unsuccessful in graduate school.

Maybe it would have better to have delayed my review after gaining more experience trying to get a position in the conventional job market, or having done more freelance work on sites like elance, oDesk, or possibly TopCoder. However, I think as time goes by I'll see this book as being very useful.

I'm eager to read more Head First books, because I think the model is a very good one. For web development in particular I'm thinking about reading Head First JavaScript also by Michael Morrison. However, I may read some of the Head First Java book so that I can learn enough to start competing on TopCoder algorithm competitions.

I think Head First SQL (also by Lynn Beighley) may also be very useful for learning SQL in more detail toward the goal of gaining a MySQL certification.

David

P.S. You'll need of course a good editor or IDE to go through the book and for PHP/MySQL coding tasks. I was weaned on Emacs, but when doing the book, and the contract I used HTML-kit.

HTML-kit worked fine, and is a good program. On the other I'm thinking that Emacs might be better for different reasons:

1. Automatic indenting.
2. Matching parenthesis.
3. Incremental search (find might have some bug in HTML-kit)

Eclipse is probably now the most advanced IDE (possibly too sophisticated for the kinds of jobs I'd be working on in the near future).

Martha's Vineyard - Isle of Dreams, by Susan Branch

New York Times Bestseller, Travel      In the winter of 1982, long before she became the watercolor artist and author we know today, Susan Branch, 34-years-old and heartbroken from the sudden and unexpected end of her marriage in California, "ran away from home" to the Island of Martha's Vineyard hoping to gain perspective.       It was meant to be temporary, a three-month time-out from the daily grind of being broken up and miserable, but within days of her arrival, alone and not quite in her right mind, Susan "accidentally" bought a tiny one-bedroom cottage in the woods ~ which is how she discovered she was moving 3,000 miles away from everyone and everything she had known and loved.         Funny, observant, touching, and addictive (you are not going to want this book to end), based on the diaries she has kept all her life, Susan Branch relates her inspirational tale of lost love and self discovery, her search for roots, purpose, and destiny with laugh-out-loud honesty. A road map for overcoming loss, following your heart, and making dreams come true, charmingly hand-lettered and watercolored in Susan's inimitable style, there are diary excerpts, recipes, and hundreds of photographs.       Printed in the USA, in full color with a ribbon bookmark, Martha's Vineyard, Isle of Dreams is book number two of a continuing story . . . Book one was The Fairy Tale Girl which came out October 2015, and book 3, which was written first, was A Fine Romance, Falling in Love with the English Countryside published in August 2013.

Just one more five star review for any doubters out there!
By Elizabetta
It seems almost pointless to add yet another five star review to the many that are already posted. And I am not sure that I can really add much to what has already been said. But here I am -- writing 'yet another five star review' because I absolutely LOVED this book! I bought the trilogy ["Fairytale Girl", "Martha's Vineyard" and "A Fine Romance" ] together as I didn't discover them until they had all been published. These books are a huge departure from Susan Branch's celebrated cookbooks and frankly I wasn't expecting to love them as much as I did. But twenty pages into the first one I was smitten; I found them very hard to put down and in fact stayed up way too late reading, even when I came to the end of one. (I 'needed' to know what happened next!)

This second volume is absolute magic. I have always loved New England even though I have only ever been there once, on a magical trip to Maine one summer with a daughter and two of my granddaughters. But I have always wanted to experience it for myself in person and this book let me do that as closely as I possibly could without actually being there. Susan manages to capture so very much of the ambiance of her surroundings while at the same time sharing her personal story in ways that are poignantly endearing. I felt like her best friend as I read through the pages, something that many authors have attempted to evoke in their writing but have failed to do. Interspersed throughout are her utterly charming water color pictures which really are worth a thousand words!

If you are an armchair traveler, an autobiography lover, an admirer of artistic talent or even just a curious reader, I suspect that this book is one you might really enjoy. I hated for it to end; in fact I plan on reading it again in the very near future. It inspired me, it encouraged me. it took me out of my own little life's frame of reference and most of all it made me love New England even more than I already did. I hope that it will do the same for you should you decide to read it for yourself..

A Kindred Spirit
By LuvToRead30
With honesty, courage, and beauty Susan Branch has written another wonderful book called Martha's Vineyard, Isle of Dreams. This is one woman's journey of independence, self discovery, and facing of fears. It is a story of perseverance, finding your dreams, and enjoying the little things in life that make it beautiful. All of Susan Branch's books make life more beautiful and her latest is no exception. It's full of wonderfully detailed watercolors and photographs that, as a reader, you wish you could open a door and walk inside. The writing is fantastic, just imagine having a conversation with your best friend because that's what Susan's writing is like: comfortable, witty, honest, an eye for the little details and exchanging of recipes. This book belongs with other beloved classics and kindred spirits of the literary world like Anne of Green Gables, Little Women, and Bridget Jones's Diary to name a few. This book will be a heartfelt inspiration to a person of any age because everyone must go on a journey to find their true self at some point in life. This book is part of a trilogy, the other two are The Fairy Tale Girl and A Fine Romance:Falling in Love with the English Countryside, both of which are also amazing books and highly recommended. Susan Branch has also written numerous cookbooks that showcase her art and delicious recipes. Read Martha's Vineyard, Isle of Dreams, you won't be sorry!

Susan Branch is an absolute treasure
By AngBadWolf
I discovered Susan Branch at my local library. It was happenstance I'd only breezed by the shelf on the way to pick up my young studious child. I immediately fell under her spell and needed to own all of her books to treasure always. I've enjoyed revisiting these books each fall. They awaken my sleeping artist, they remind me of the humble treasures we at times take for granted like our homemaking skills the smell of fresh baked goods and what women can achieve when we follow our hearts desire. I'm so pleased with the ownership of my beautiful copy of Martha's Vineyard and have a sneaking suspicion a lovely husband of mine ordered me a fresh copy of Fine Romance and the 2017 calendar to place under the Christmas Tree. Do go buy your own copy and visit Susan's blog. You'll be very happy you did!
