She has performed in several regional theaters in the East and Midwest, originating roles in the premieres of Christopher Durang's Mrs. Bob Cratchit's Wild Christmas Binge and David Turkel's Wild Signs and Holler. In 2011 she became the first woman winner of the annual Stella Screaming Contest in New Orleans.

A collection of real gems

To say that Elena Passarello’s essays are interesting and descriptive would be a grave understatement. There is a way that people can image things in their heads from people describing it to them, and Elena Passarello’s collection of essays in this book did it for me. She would describe origins of screams and theories of where it all came from in such a way that I literally did research on my own to find the bits of information that she mentioned. Her style of explanation the Voyager odyssey and the likes of “Johnny B. Goode” had me completely hooked because it explains the facts in ways that people originally don’t realize.
Her essay “Harpy” still delivered the same type of explanation whilst describing aspects of her childhood; bringing them to live as we all have our own silly things. She animates them in a way to the reader, explaining each thing, its origins and its proper place in history, as well as its present application. It all just…fits. She describes screams, guttural sounds and the word ‘Ew’ as one would describe rocket science: With excruciating amounts of detail and precision.
She brings things out of the dark where people had supposed they had stayed. Each essay starts with a quick little narrative of some event or something that happened that involved some voice action or something vocal that would distinguish someone apart from everything else, and she expounds on it marvelously. This book is amazing, but sometimes divulges too much detail that could end up boring the reader. Despite this small setback, she changes the tone quick enough to keep one engaged. 5 stars for this amazing collection of essays!

I have throughly enjoyed reading "Let Me Clear My Throat." It's a wonderful mix of interesting essays about sound and the human voice. The essays are interesting, funny and thought provoking. They made me want to dive deeper into the subjects - and I love that, when a book inspires me to continue researching on my own!

and even fun. Never thought you cared what exactly the “Rebel ...

An entire essay collection focused solely on the human voice may not sound particularly interesting, but the passion, research, and wit that Elena Passarello brings to Let Me Clear My Throat makes it interesting, and even fun. Never thought you cared what exactly the “Rebel Yell” from the U.S. Civil War sounded like? You’ll care, once you read “How to Spell the Rebel Yell.” But she writes about things you’ll be interested to read, too, like Judy Garland, Frank Sinatra, and--most importantly--Passarello’s own experience winning the “Stella Shout Out” screaming contest. (Once you read the essay, you have to watch the Youtube video of her performance--she makes it easy by naming the video specifically in the essay. It’s pretty great.)

Passarello’s ability to describe un-spellable sounds is pretty impressive. I listened to some of the recordings she mentions in her essays, and I was surprised how accurately they matched the descriptions in the essays.

I do want to point out, though, that this is an essay collection with mostly research-driven essays. In other words, it’s generally not much of a page-turner. It’s interesting and fun, but I wouldn’t recommend trying to read the whole thing over just a couple of days (although it’s not a particularly long book). Like most essay collections, I would think, this collection is best read over a couple weeks at least, maybe an essay a day. The essays are dense with great language and great ideas, and for me, they needed time to soak in.

If you’re looking for great essays, Passarello is a great way to go. She knows her stuff.

Beautiful book, some flaws

Great book. Taught me so much about the world of product design without splurging on a degree.

My two issues:
1) The book does a poor job of explaining the materials. As a rookie, it would have been helpful for more simple (less design professional) language, and pictures of each material in use. I had to constantly google search what each material is used for.

2) The book was published in 2011. This industry changes all the time with new tech. Right now all the hype is around 3-d printing, and there's no mention of it. I would love the book with an updated edition.

I initially rented this book from the library and will be getting my own copy to refer back to. Great book, great design, and super helpful towards my product design aspirations. Highly recommend as a newbie.

As an author of books on selling, I keep an eye out for the best books on sales and sales psychology. This book is a game changer.

In reply to the few one star reviews...It has been stated in the uncharitable reviews, that the entire content of the book could have been written in a few pages. I agree, at first look, this would seem true. The Harvard Business Review article "Harnessing the Science of Persuasion" by Cialdini, from their October 2001 issue....is a good example. You can even get the Six Principles from the books Table Of Contents...save yourself some time.

But sales ideas have to not just be listed....not just explained...they have to be sold. Examples have to be given, Principles have to be
explained...we need proof. And you need the entire book to do that. The people who read a short article by the author, maybe read the
ideas...but nothing else happens. Salespeople are changed by the content of this book, like with all great sales books. For salespeople to benefit from a sales book, the ideas have to be explained, understood, proven, accepted, and made real. This book does that.
I own perhaps 2,000 books on the subject of selling. This is certainly in the top 5.

Great content but e-book version needs update

As far as psychology books go, this one is highly readable and even enjoyable. There is a wry sense of humor told tongue-in-cheek as only academics can. To learn about the dark art of 'compliance professionals' is entertaining, and may even be useful, though I wouldn't call this a self-help book. It also goes a bit more in-depth than your average popular psychology text. While the content deserves five stars, I give this book 4 stars because of the Kindle edition. It must have been digitized in the early days of Kindle. For example, the table of contents isn't available in the side menu, and footnotes are not hyperlinks but just numbers. With a proper update, it should be a must-read.

18th-century locker-room humor!

Knapp's annotated edition of "Humphry Clinker" is a labor of love, achieved with infinite care and impeccable scholarship, that will be welcome both by the specialist and the common reader. The map of the Bramble family's ramblings, a short but pithy introduction, and the chronology of Smollett's life and works enable the reader to launch into this epistolary novel with a maximum of relevant background information and a minimum of cumbersome, sterile erudition. Knapp's notes are numerous and precise, bearing witness to his intimate knowledge of the literary, historical, and sociological aspects of 18th-century life in Great Britain. As the vernacular of "Humphry Clinker" is very colloquial, readers will be mentally, and effusively, thanking Knapp for having been so thorough.
