Why I Am Not A Moslem, by Dr. Peter S. Ruckman

This is the testimony of a man who has read through the Koran seventeen times, and has been an ardent student of “Islam” for many years. Being familiar with the material put out by the official Islamic publishing company in Lahore, Pakistan, Dr. Ruckman presents the reasons why he rejects Mohammedanism based on the false cover-up of its “prophet” and book, and its false attitude toward all non-Moslems. The author has read and studied the Koran both before and after his conversion to Biblical Christianity and has come to the conclusion that Islam is bereft of any joy, assurance of salvation or eternal life, and does nothing but reinforce the baser lusts of the sinful, Adamic, carnal nature. It is the perfect religion for fornicating killers.

Islam Exposed!
By Bible Thumper
Get the pure, unfiltered, honest truth about the world's most ridiculous religion (Islam), its most ridiculous god (Allah), the most ridiculous religious book (the Koran), and the poorest excuse for a prophet who ever lived (Muhammad the pedophile)!

Good Book!

I've been a Ruckmanite for several years. I like his writing, and preaching style! For serious christians, and students of the Bible, I'd recommend his works.

Don't waste your time or money.
By Peko76
I believe the author's intent was to argue in favor of Biblical inerrancy. What he produced is a poorly written diatribe, reading more like a transcript of a long rant after the author had a few beers. If you are looking for a reasoned, well written theological justification for the author's stated beliefs, look elsewhere. Based on this sample, I also recommend not wasting your time on any of his other writings. I only gave the one star to be able to submit a review, Amazon needs to provide for a negative star rating.

First published in Great Britain in 1948, this book examines the definition of goodness as being distinct from the question of What things are good? Although less immediately and obviously practical, Dr. Ewing argues that the former question is more fundamental since it raises the issue of whether ethics is explicable wholly in terms of something else, for example, human psychology. Ewing states in his preface that the definition of goodness needs to be confirmed before one decides on the place value is to occupy in our conception of reality or on the ultimate characteristics which make one action right and another wrong. This book discusses these issues.

Hard to find; worth the effort
    By A Customer
This book is hard to come by, but well worth all the searching if you are planning to take the DANTES principles of Public Speaking Exam for college credit. Jack Rudman's guides have been useful to me in taking (and passing) five different DANTES exams. For anyone who doesn't know, DANTES are like CLEP but originally started by the military. Official info can be found at getcollegecredit.com on the program.
This guides is comprehensive. It provides copies of all the official preparation materials provided by the Chauncey Group (who administers the test), along with many practice tests taken from old exams, examples of figures of speech and other important parts of public speaking, articles and excerpts from books and magazine about public speaking, as well as a glossary of public speaking basics. If you find yourself getting stuck on any of the practice tests in certain areas, look in the glossary to help review that subject. For this exam you will have to give a speech on tape on a topic chosen by the Chauncey Group. You must pass both the written and oral sections to earn credit.

A poor excuse for a study guide
    By Justin G.
Unlike Comex's excellent CLEP study guides, the amateurish study guide for the DANTES Principles of Public Speaking test was hardly useful at all. Essentially, this "guide" is a bunch of practice tests spiral bound together. There's no rhyme or reason to the order of questions, no grouping by subjects, heavy repetition of questions, and it even changes fonts from test to test.

I could look over the sloppy presentation if there was some useful information inside, but unlike the CLEP guide, which gave an overview of the fundamentals of the subject, the DANTES guide has nothing but questions and answers. If you want to know why you got an answer right or wrong, you have to do your own research. If they had made that clear up front, I probably wouldn't have bothered buying this so-called guide.

The guide is probably useful in that you're bound to pick up some answers by sheer repetition, but if you buy it expecting to dominate the actual DANTES test or actually learn something, you're going to be sadly disappointed.

FOLLOW UP: I finally got my test results back, and I passed by a pretty decent margin. I suppose that means this guide is a success, but I still think it's pretty shabby.

    Losing Hope Chapter One
My heart rate is signaling for me to just walk away. Les has reminded me more than once that it’s not my business. She’s never been a brother before, though. She has no idea how hard it is to sit back and not let it be my business. That’s why, right now, this son-of-a-bitch is my number-one priority.

I slide my hands into the back pockets of my jeans and hope to hell I can keep them there. I’m standing behind the couch, looking down at him. I don’t know how long it’ll take him to notice I’m here. Considering the grip he has on the chick straddling his lap, I doubt he’ll notice for a while. I remain behind them for several minutes while the party continues around us, everyone completely unaware that I’m a fraction away from losing my mind. I would take out my phone so that I’d have evidence, but I couldn’t do that to Les. She doesn’t need a visual.

“Hey,” I finally say, unable to contain my silence a second longer. If I have to watch him palm this chick’s breast one more time without a single ounce of respect for his relationship with Les, I’ll rip his fucking hand off.

Grayson tears his mouth away from hers and tilts his head back, looking up at me with glossed-over eyes. I can see the fear settle in when it clicks—when he finally realizes that the last person he thought would be here tonight actually showed up.

“Holder,” he says, pushing the girl off his lap. He struggles to his feet but can hardly stand up straight. He looks at me pleadingly, pointing at the girl, who’s now adjusting her barely-there skirt. “This isn’t . . . it’s not what it looks like.”

I slide my hands out of my back pockets and fold my arms across my chest. My fist is closer to him now and I have to clench it, knowing how good it would feel to punch his face in.

I look down to the floor and inhale a breath. Then another. And one more just for show, since I’m really enjoying watching him squirm. I shake my head and raise my eyes back to his. “Give me your phone.”

The confusion on his face would be comical if I weren’t so pissed. He laughs and attempts to back up a step, but bumps into the coffee table. He catches himself by pressing his hand onto the glass and straightens back up. “Get your own fucking phone,” he mumbles. He doesn’t look back at me as he maneuvers his way around the coffee table. I calmly walk around the couch and intercept him, holding out my hand.

“Give me your phone, Grayson. Now.”

I’m not really at an advantage sizewise, since we’re about the same build. However, I’m definitely at an advantage if you take my anger into consideration, and Grayson can clearly see that. He takes a step back, which probably isn’t a very smart move considering he’s backing himself straight into the corner of the living room. He fumbles with his pocket and finally pulls out his phone.

“What the hell do you want my phone for?” he says. I grab it out of his hands and dial Les’s number without hitting send. I hand it back to him.

“Call her. Tell her what a bastard you are and end it.”

Grayson looks down at his phone, then back up at me. “Go fuck yourself,” he spits.

I inhale a calming breath, then roll my neck and pop my jaw. When that doesn’t help ease my urge to make him bleed, I reach forward, grab the collar of his shirt and shove him hard against the wall, pinning his neck with my forearm. I remind myself that if I kick his ass before he makes the call, my remaining calm for the past ten minutes will have been pointless.

My teeth are clenched, my jaw is tight, and my pulse is pounding in my head. I’ve never hated anyone more than in this moment. The intensity of what I wish I could do to him right now is even scaring me.

I look him hard in the eyes and let him know how the next few minutes are about to play out. “Grayson,” I say through clenched teeth. “Unless you want me to do what I really want to do to you right now, you will put the phone to your ear, you will call my sister, and you will end it. Then you’re going to hang up the phone and never speak to her again.” I press my arm harder against his neck, taking note of the fact that his face is now redder than his shirt, due to lack of oxygen.

“Fine,” he grumbles, attempting to free himself from the hold I have on him. I wait until he looks down at the phone and hits send before I release my arm and let go of his shirt. He puts the phone to his ear and never stops looking at me as we both stand still and wait for Les to answer.

I know what this will do to her, but she has no idea what he does behind her back. No matter how many times she hears it from other people, he’s somehow able to weasel his way back into her life every time.

Not this time. Not if I have any control over it. I won’t sit back and let him do this to my sister anymore.

“Hey,” he says into the phone. He tries to turn away from me to speak to her, but I shove his shoulder back against the wall. He winces.

“No, babe,” he says nervously. “I’m at Jaxon’s house.” There’s a long pause while he listens to her speak. “I know that’s what I said, but I lied. That’s why I’m calling. Les, I . . . I think we need some space.”

I shake my head, letting him know that he needs to make it an absolute break-up. I’m not looking for him to give her space. I’m looking for him to give my sister permanent freedom.

He rolls his eyes and flips me off with his free hand. “I’m breaking up with you,” he says flatly. He allows her to talk while he remains silent. The fact that he’s showing no remorse whatsoever proves what a heartless dick he is. My hands are shaking and my chest tightens, knowing exactly what this is doing to Les right now. I hate myself for forcing this to happen, but Les deserves better, even if she doesn’t think she does.

“I’m hanging up now,” he says into the phone.

I shove his head back against the wall and force him to look at me. “Apologize to her,” I say quietly, not wanting her to hear me in the background. He closes his eyes and sighs, then ducks his head.

“I’m sorry, Lesslie. I didn’t want to do this.” He pulls the phone from his ear and abruptly ends the call. He stares at the screen for several seconds. “I hope you’re happy,” he says, looking back up at me. “Because you just broke your sister’s heart.”

That’s the last thing Grayson says to me. My fist meets his jaw twice before he hits the floor. I shake out my hand, back away from him, and make my way to the exit. Before I even reach my car, my phone is buzzing in my back pocket. I pull it out and don’t even look at the screen before answering it.

“Hey,” I say, attempting to control the trembling anger in my voice when I hear her crying on the other end. “I’m on my way, Les. It’ll be okay, I’m on my way.”

    •   •   •

It’s been an entire day since Grayson made the call, but I still feel guilty, so I tack on an extra two miles to my evening run for self-inflicted punishment. Seeing Les torn up like she was last night wasn’t something I had expected. I realize now that having him call her like I did probably wasn’t the best way of handling things, but there’s no way I could just sit back and allow him to dick around on her like he was.

The most unexpected thing about Les’s reaction was that her anger wasn’t solely placed on Grayson. It was as if she was pissed at the entire male population. She kept referring to men as “sick bastards,” pacing her bedroom floor back and forth, while I just sat there and watched her vent. She finally broke down, crawled into bed, and cried herself to sleep. I lay awake, knowing I had a hand in her heartache. I stayed in her room the whole night, partly to make sure she was okay, but mostly because I didn’t want her picking up the phone and calling Grayson in a moment of desperation.

She’s stronger than I give her credit for, though. She didn’t attempt to call him last night and she’s made no attempt to call him today. She didn’t get much sleep last night, so she went to her room before lunch to nap. However, I’ve been pausing outside her bedroom door throughout the day just to make sure I couldn’t hear her on the phone, so I know she hasn’t made any attempts to call him. At least while I’ve been home. In fact, I’m pretty sure the heartless phone call from him last night was exactly what she needed to finally see him for who he really is.

I kick my shoes off at the door and walk to the kitchen to refill my water. It’s Saturday night and I would normally be heading out with Daniel, but I already texted him to let him know I was staying in tonight. Les made me promise I would stay in with her because she didn’t want to go out and chance running into Grayson yet. She’s lucky she’s cool, because I don’t know many seventeen-year-old guys who would give up a Saturday night to watch chick flicks with his heartbroken sister. But then again, most siblings don’t have what Les and I have. I don’t know if our close relationship has anything to do with the fact that we’re twins. She’s my only sibling, so I don’t have anything to compare us to. She might argue that I’m too protective of her, and there may be some truth to that argument, but I don’t plan on changing anytime soon. Or ever.

I run up the stairs, pull my shirt off, and push open the bathroom door. I turn the water on, then walk across the hall and knock on her bedroom door. “I’m taking a quick shower, will you order the pizza?”

I brace my hand against her door and reach down to pull my socks off. I turn around and toss them into the bathroom, then beat on her door again. “Les!”

When she doesn’t respond, I sigh and look up at the ceiling. If she’s on the phone with him, I’ll be pissed. But if she’s on the phone with him, it probably means he’s telling her the break-up was all my fault and she’ll be the one who’s pissed. I wipe my palms on my shorts and open the door to her bedroom, preparing for another heated lecture on how I need to mind my own business.

    •   •   •

I see Les on her bed after I walk into her room, and I’m immediately taken back to when I was a little boy. Back to the moment that changed me. Everything about me. Everything about the world around me. My whole world turned from a place full of vibrant colors to a dull, lifeless gray. The sky, the grass, the trees . . . all the things that were once beautiful were stripped of their magnificence the moment I realized I was responsible for our best friend Hope’s disappearance.

I never looked at people the same way. I never looked at nature the same way. I never looked at my future the same way. Everything went from having a meaning, a purpose, and a reason, to simply being a second-rate version of what life was supposed to be like. My once effervescent world was suddenly a blurred, gray, colorless photocopy.

    Just like Les’s eyes.

They aren’t hers. They’re open. They’re looking right at me from her position on the bed.

    But they aren’t hers.

The color in her eyes is gone. This girl is a gray, colorless photocopy of my sister.

    My Les.

I can’t move. I wait for her to blink, to laugh, to revel in the twisted aftermath of the sick, fucking joke she’s playing right now. I wait for my heart to start beating again, for my lungs to start working again. I wait for control of my body to return to me because I don’t know who has control of it right now. I sure as hell don’t. I wait and I wait and I wonder how long she can keep this up. How long can people keep their eyes open like that? How long can people not breathe before their body jerks for that desperately needed gasp of air?

How fucking long before I do something to help her?

My hands are touching her face, grabbing her arm, shaking her whole body until she’s in my arms and I’m pulling her onto my lap. The empty pill bottle falls out of her hand and lands on the floor but I refuse to look at it. Her eyes are still lifeless and she’s no longer looking at me as the head between my hands falls backward every time I try to lift it up.

She doesn’t flinch when I scream her name, and she doesn’t wince when I slap her, and she doesn’t react when I start to cry.

She doesn’t do a goddamned thing.

She doesn’t even tell me it’ll be okay when every single ounce of whatever was left inside my chest is propelled out of me the moment I realize that the very best part of me is dead.

I loved reliving this story about Hope, Dean, and Les thru Holder's eyes. 5 loving stars.
    By annmric
I love being inside Dean's head reading his journal entries. This story is about Dean and how he deals with losing both Hope and Les.
Colleen handles these sensitive subject matters with great precision. High school is tough and I've never personally known someone to die during that time so this is a new experience for me. Colleen has covered all the bases.
Colleen adds a nice balance to this story considering the topic of death and kidnapping. There's humor mixed in with grief. There's anger mixed in with happiness. There's fighting mixed in with loving. There's intimacy mixed in with cheating.
I read Hopeless maybe 3 years ago and have wanted to read Losing Hope for those 3 years. I am amazed how easily all the information came back so simply. It was as if I read it yesterday. That story imprinted itself on my mind forever. I'm not one to remember details of a story but this one is still fresh in my mind. It has a draw to me. It touched my heart.
Holder is playing the part of a patient guy and its intoxicating. The flirting is seductive. I'm imprinting each moment in my mind. I love how Holder wants every moment to have meaning. Each shared encounter ship has to be relevant. I'm driven crazy by the sweet torture of Holder and his appreciation for Sky when he's adoring her.
I'm so wrapped up this story for a second time and I can't pull myself away. There is no part of the story that is easy to step away from. From one chapter to the next I find myself eagerly turning the pages. I love Holders character. I find Colleen has a way of capturing the innocence of a young male character. It's so sweet and pure. It makes me ache to have that tenderness.
Colleen you have a brilliant mind. I can see why people love you so much. You have this ability to look at all possible scenarios. You are like the devils advocate. Someone who can understand every possible path and give clarity to that perspective. That's what draws the reader. It's emotional and dynamic.

Get ready to fall in love with this book...
    By Gabriella
After reading Hopeless (and loving it) I was hesitant about Losing hope. I thought maybe it would be repetitive and not as gripping as Hopeless. I honestly doubted that Coleen Hoover was going to write the same story again and get the reader just as involved as with Hopeless. I was wrong. I can't explain how she does it, but even though you're reading the same story it is completely different. A lot of the words might be the same, but the perspective, the feelings they convey, and the way they grab at you makes you feel you're reading it for the first time, but even better, because having read sky's side and now reading Holder's side now you feel completely surrounded by their feelings, their world and the events that are enfolding them. You feel your are as much part or the story as they are, because she has a beautiful and really kind of perfect way of putting feelings into words. And you will hopelessly fall in love with Holder again and again with every turn of the page. Anyone that reads hopeless has to read Losing hope. They should actually be sold together because with Losing Hope you get all the closure and and the loose ends finally come together to create a perfect circle. It absolutely is the other half of the first book.
One of the best YA authors out there.

    Equally as good as Hopeless
    By Kindle Customer
So, for starters, this is COMPANION and NOT A SEQUEL. I knew this before reading the book. I was somewhat concerned that it would be repetitive of Hopeless without filling in more of the story to the reader. Hopeless itself was fulfilling and didn't leave me to ponder many unanswered questions. However, I did enjoy this book every bit as much as I enjoyed Hopeless. And although it may seem repetitive to have the same scenes in both books, it is helpful to know where you are at in the story's timeline. I definitely learned more about all the characters in Losing Hope. And the new perspective does fill in things that I didn't expect. Now on to Finding Cinderella. #cohort

'Pitched at the intermediate and above swimmer, as well as their coaches, the book is nothing if not comprehensive. SwimSmooth has always sought to make its training resources accessible and the book follows this easy approach. Language and tone is understated but its power is in its ability to communicate ideas with casual ease. It's an excellent compendium of work and sits well with SwimSmooth's website, DVDs and blogs.' Ahead of the game
    By David Kaufman
This book is very easy to understand, well written and on the cutting edge of swimming. I have read many books on the subject of swimming and most try to get you to swim in one particular way. This is the first book that I have seen that encourages you to swim in the fashion that works best for you depending on a few factors such as body type, the particular distance that you are doing, and whether you are swimming in a pool or open water.
I could not put it down and I think that it will be a best seller among swimmers, triathletes and their coaches. It is a must read! But the best part was that I was able to get it instantly for $9.99 on my kindle instead of pre-ordering for $19.37.
One thing that should be edited is that on the kindle edition it is hard to read some of the captions on one or two pages.

    Best modern freestyle swim book
    By ynot
I am a recreational swimmer who tried to relearn to swim better back in 1998 from Terry Laughlin's book. I have never been on a swim team to get good coaching advice.

I have recently looked at a few new and old how-to-swim books. The newer advice is quite different from the older books which encouraged habits that can easily lead to shoulder injuries.

    1)
A new book "Swim Smooth" has the most modern advice of all, along with a fine web site swimsmooth.com with a super free app you can download and watch from any angle and at very slow speed (esp from underneath to see the difference from the old S-shape recommended arm movement for the crawl). Looking through this book a few days ago already has led to a major revision of my freestyle.
You can get the essential info from this fun book by just looking at the numerous pictures and reading the captions.
My self-taught freestyle stroke has several major flaws, eg. I should not angle my hand sideways on entry which can injure the shoulder and I should not cross the center line on arm extension or pushback (some old books show the arm crossing horizontally under the body) which loses propulsion and leads to being off balance. The entry angle should be at a steep approx 45 degree angle and the hand should tip down for the catch right after full extension (instead of gliding more). And forget about a sideways scull and S-shape arm movement (update: I have added back a partial S movement which seems to flow better with increased speeds if you use fins, plus Olympic swimmers do that too).
Anyway, the book "Swim Smooth" and web site (with the downloaded MrSmooth app) is my top choice for a relearn-to-swim-freestyle book for amateurs who have no coach.

    2)
Next in line is the excellent second edition of "Fitness Swimming", pages 1-69, page 86, and pages 119-120 (the rest is workout schedules). This book has by far the best compact explanation of the theory and guidelines for the modern injury-free freestyle . It finally explained to me exactly how to accomplish the 2-beat kick as well as the unfathomable (from other books) 6-beat kick.

    3)
Then there's the other modern swim book that I re-learned to swim from in 1998. Too bad in that book (or even his latest one) there is no good description of the arc the hand travels (ie. S-shape or not) or fundamental principles like the hand must always be inside the elbow distance (otherwise .. injury) and the similar dangers of angling the hand on entry, or of the merits of a steeper hand entry (but see his DVD below). Terry Laughlin's books (latest best all-stroke intro is called "Extraordinary Swimming for every body") have been adopted widely and I still would recommend this book as one of the several must-have's for someone still learning to swim better. If I was teaching someone to swim from ground zero, I would use the exercises to lead up to the crawl in that book's freestyle chapter (which are easier to see/appreciate in the bigger format "Total Immersion Pool Primer", basically drills in balance and body rotation) or in Terry's DVD "Perpetual Motion Freestyle in 10 Lessons", which teaches how to swim by progressive enhancement of fundamental balance and propulsion skills. The graduated drills are clearly demonstrated and the progression to developing the complete stroke and 2-beat flick kick is logical.

    4)
"Learn to Swim in a Weekend" is a super compact (90 pages), all-picture guide to the major strokes plus turning and diving, about 8 easy to look at pages per stroke type. This is a fun book to look through and the pictures are superb in showing the essentials of each stroke.

So those are the 4 most essential how-to-swim or how-to-relearn-to-swim-better books I've discovered.

Then there's the very old swimming book "Swimming: Steps to Success" which has some bad crawl advice (which was considered good advice in the 1960's), but includes a few non-major strokes such as the sidestroke and the Double Trudgen which I'll learn sometime to amaze folks - I mean, who really knows that stroke nowadays other than ocean lifeguards! The third edition of this book has not changed from the very old first edition, so do not expect modern swimming advice.

History: the first-ever "modern" swim book was "Complete Book of Swimming" by James Counsilman (1979) which authors since have liberally copied text from. This was "the" modern theory and how to swim book until the 1990's and has held up remarkably well, plus it's fun to see pictures of Mark Spitz's swim strokes.

Great book, great folks who wrote it, excellent help!
    By AlexJouJou
Amazing book. It clearly identified so many issues I have with swimming after getting back in the water after 20 years. I'm training for a triathlon and swimming is my weak area so I need to work on it. I'll come back and update the review as I go further through it but I've already determined what type I am and all of it was dead bang on. I've used several of the exercises and it is definitely helping to increase confidence. They explain things so anyone can understand. The drills make sense and move you along well enough you don't feel like you are taking everything soooooo sllllloooowwwwwwllllyyy you are bored. The most frequently recommended book to me from other triathletes is the Total Immersion: The Revolutionary Way To Swim Better, Faster, and Easier but that seemed to want me to lengthen my stroke and I could not get the rhythm of breathing to work with such a longer stroke. I'm very short and petite and it just wasn't working. Also I read so many blogs and info that it took people YEARS to get comfortable and be a better swimmer with TI so the advice was don't give up. That's great but I'm just not that patient. I want to be able to build, see progress, and I want my swimming to be based on me and how it works best for me.

I bought the Easy Freestyle Swimming by Terry Laughlin but really struggled to get through it. It was so very very boring and I didn't feel like I was making any progress other than comfort in the water. I actually fell asleep watching it three times. I really wanted to love it because it comes so highly recommended...and I did take some advice away but I did not feel it was going (on my own) to really help me. I think with TI I need to find a clinic and a coach so I can do it in person. Perhaps it is much better that way.

I then bought the SwimSmooth DVD Boxset, Learn to Swim DVD, and Catch Masterclass - and the lights clicked on. I had already read the book and was doing many of the drills. Their verbal cue system just works for me. They show the wrong way to do the technique and give many pointers. I also liked, and this worked for me, that sometimes you do something as a reaction to something else. I was scissor kicking because my hands were going across my body on entry and below the water and it was the way I was trying to balance. Once I read/watched that I immediately was able to work on fixing it. Not the kick - the stroke and follow through - which fixed the kick no problem.

Of the two programs (TI or this one) I strongly prefer this one because the idea we are all unique and not one stroke or way to swim will fit everyone just "fits" me. 5 very strong stars. If you have to buy one book on swimming and you are working towards any sort of competition or you want to learn strongly (vs. just getting a workout - I was doing that but still gasping after 50 meters!) I recommend Swim Smooth.

They have a great website and when I had a question about something I wanted to order they emailed right back and were very encouraging. It felt personal. I feel like I can do it. In SS terms I'm a bambino and I'm following many drills and my swimming has improved by leaps and bounds and I'm looking to continue that pathway.
