About the Author

Songnian Li is Associate Professor in Geomatics Engineering at the Ryerson University, Canada. He is the Chair of the ISPRS Working Group IV/5 on "Distributed, Web-based Geoinformation Services and Applications". His current research interests include web mapping and geospatial services, collaborative GIS systems and decision support, geospatial data acquisition, and spatiotemporal analysis applications.

Suzana Dragicevic is Professor at Geography Department at Simon Fraser University, Canada. She is the Secretary of the ISPRS Working Group IV/5 on "Distributed, Web-based Geoinformation Services and Applications". Her primary research interests include geographic information systems (GIS) and science, spatial data analysis and modelling, complex systems, fuzzy sets and systems, temporal GIS, web-based and collaborative GIS.

Bert Veenendaal is Professor in Geographic Information Science and Head of Department of Spatial Sciences at Curtin University of Technology, Australia. He is a co-chair of the ISPRS Working Group IV/5 on "Distributed, Web-based Geoinformation Services and Applications". His current research interests include geographic information science, geospatial analysis and data handling, geospatial web mapping and services, collaborative GIS and virtual/interactive e-learning.

The three major essays present information on such diverse issues as the sculptor's sources of inspiration, his formal approach, and the works' original presentation. Friedrich Teja Bach rejects the notion of Brancusi's oeuvre as hermetic, timeless and pure, and examines instead the heterogeneous combinations of form and material that make Brancusi's works compellingly paradoxical. Margit Rowell explores the sculptor's place in the artistic climate of Paris in the 1910s and 1920s and his rejection of dominant styles and subject matter in favour of non-Western sources, particularly Asian art. Ann Temkin traces the history of Brancusi's American patronage during his lifetime by such influential collectors as John Quinn, Katherine Dreier, James Johnson Sweeney, and Louise and Walter Arensberg. The plate section features full-colour reproductions of over 100 sculptures, with accompanying texts and visual references. In addition, 55 photographs by Brancusi in full-page duotone are shown alongside a major selection of his sculptures. There are also colour and black and white reproductions of over forty of his drawings - as well as prefatory essays on the photographs and drawings, a chronology, and bibliographic and exhibition listings.

Ethereal sculpture...

In the Sucevita Cloisters in Sucevita Romania a painted vault depicts a repeated rhomboid design in the shape of a pillar. Wooden funery columns in Loman Cemetery in Hunedoara, Transylvania, Romania also exhibit the rhomboidal design, albeit on a much more articulated, differentiated, and elaborate scale.
The Romanina artist, Constantin Brancusi brought the image of the rhomboid pillar to his wonderful sculpture the "Endless Column." For Brancusi, the rhomboid pillar was the embodiment of the "axis mundi", the world's axis, the tree of life, the pillar of the sky, the pivot of the universe. He once referred to these columns as stairways to heaven. Peoples all over the world have used the metaphysical pillar to link the earth and the sun, the source of all life.
The pillar image may not seem as fresh today as it did when arrived on the Paris art scene in the early 20th Century, but today, many art critics view the Romanian-born Parisian sculptor Brancusi as a major player in the Modern art movement. Along with Picasso, Brancusi introduced the notion of using traditional art forms in Western art--including 'totem' poles or sacred pillars, stone plinths, and other metaphysical carvings.
BRANCUSI was published by the Philadelphia Museum of Art in conjunction with a major retrospective of his work. Brancusi apparently deplored analytic attempts to understand his art (he felt his works should simply be "enjoyed" i.e. the fill the viewer with joy). However, the book is filled with material designed to help the reader "understand" and to a great extent, I feel it accomplishes it's goal.
The layout includes photographs showing how Brancusi may have found inspiration for his many birds, heads, and other organic and metaphysical works, including his rhomboidal columns. For example, one series of photographs shows Brancusi's famous "Muse" series executed in marble, bronze, and other media, and includes possible sources of inspiration such as a photograph and self-portrait of Margit Pogany. The various "Muse" may have evolved from a semi-formal bust similar to those executed by more traditional artists to a fully evolved "essence" of "head" more akin to Modern art.
I recommend this book to anyone who desires a pictoral record of the artist at work as well as many flat representations of his wonderfully formed three-dimensional sculptures and carvings.

PreS-Gr 2-When a curious penguin stumbles upon a pinecone, he doesn't quite know what it is. It doesn't seem to be a snowball, or an egg, or anything to eat, but it does seem to be very cold. Penguin knits it a scarf and thus begins a beautiful friendship. The cartoon illustrations are done with thick rounded lines, bright colors, and plenty of white space to give this story warmth and personality. Pinecone, overall a fairly quiet friend, visibly shivers, says "brrrr," and even starts sneezing. When Penguin's grandpa advocates taking him to the faraway forest where he can thrive, Penguin puts his own loneliness aside for his friend's well being. Though they can't live in the same place, the two remain close always. The spare text and clean illustrations, done in a nice variety of spot art and single and double pages, work well for sharing with a group while the tale provides great opportunities for talking one-on-one. A Sweet and Touching Picture Book

I work in the children's department at a bookstore, and I read a copy of this book shortly after we received it a few days ago. I swear, I cried. My coworkers and I have all showed this book to each other and to any customers who will listen. I had one customer who came in who was looking for a book for her grandson. I suggested this book, and she said no, saying that she only buys paperbacks because hardcovers are too expensive. I told her that she needed to at least read it because it was so beautiful. I left her alone, and she found me a few minutes later with tears in her eyes, thanking me for showing her this book. She ended up buying two copies. This book is about friendships, love, knowing when to let go and when to hang on. I'm still in college and I don't have any kids yet, but I've already bought my copy, just so I'll have it ready when I have my own little ones someday. I love this book.

Wonderful.

My boyfriend and I were wandering through Toys R Us when we found this book, and flipped through it just for the heck of it. We go to colleges 7 hours apart, and by the end of the story, we were standing there sobbing like babies.

This book isn't really just for children; it's appropriate for anyone that is missing someone.

Besides that fact, the book was adorable, well written for a children's book, and the art was beautiful.

Beautiful book!

This is the story of Penguin and Pinecone's friendship. My kids are 11, 7, and 4, and they all love this book. My 4 year old boy "reads" it to himself all the time. I'm quite sure they'll have me knitting scarves for all the trees in my backyard this winter. :)

Starting with his own views of those whom he called the "barbari Britanni," the volume then explores a number of key topics: Petrarch's analysis of the self; his dialogue with other classical and Italian authors; Petrarchism and anti-Petrarchism in Renaissance Italy; Petrarchism in England and Scotland; and Petrarch's modern legacy in both Italy and Britain. Many important texts and poets are considered, including Giordano Bruno, Leopardi, Foscolo, Ascham, Sidney, Spenser, and Walter Savage Landor.

A great story about African resistance, and a mindless race for worthless property.

This is a great story, and the author is to be commended. It reads alot like The Great Game, except that it talks about a different piece of real estate. In this great game, the race is between France, Great Britain, and Belgium's Leopold II. At stake, worthless real estate in southern Sudan. Why?-- so an empire stretching across Africa can be established. For France, this empire would stretch from Guinea to French Somilia. For Great Britain-a Cape to Cairo empire. For Leopold II, a huge empire across the two main river systems in Africa- the Nile and Congo.

The author also establishes that in this Scramble for Africa, resistance occured regularly, whether is was the Ethipians beating up the Italians, or tribes in the Congo Free State resisting the Belgian colonial force. In Sudan, the Madhi threw the Eqyptians and British out. African resistance was high in the Scramble for Africa.

This is a great read for those interested in African history. The author did a great job of weaving facts and stories together for an entertaining read. Highly recommended.

Anyone who wants to understand African History should read this book. It remains a classic and is much better than many works written since it was first published.
